Looking to fit a winch in my 2001. I have the ARB front bumper. I don't plan on using it to often but will feel better having it, so I can explore a little more solo.
Seems like the Warn are the most recommended, but they are pricey.

Warn has introduced some new wallet friendly winches.

Summit racing is closing out all TJM branded product and I noticed a 10k winch for about 40% off which might be worth a look.

ComeUp makes a good product.

Which ever, select 9.5k & up.

I agree 9.5 or bigger. Costco has a 12000 winch in a kit for like $400. With Costco's s return policy I'd be tempted to run one on a rig that won't see much use. Good wiring, a solid battery, and taking any steps possible to seal up the winch and lube it up right ought to put you into a position to make a hard pull when you need it.

Even Warn's can fail. However, I run them on my Cruisers and haven't had a failure yet. They have a solid reputation for good reason. They also have GREAT customer service. However, in a seldom used/budget conscious build I'd try one of the other brands if needed.

Check through this sub-forum: Winching & Recovery

I run a Warn VR12k on mine and love it. I did run into some problems with water/mud ingress but I expected that when I bought a winch that's not sealed. I took it apart, regreased, and sealed it up as well as the solenoid box myself. ComeUp is another USA brand that has recently caught my attention. Both @Warn Industries and @COMEUP are active members on this forum

Re: ComeUp

Sales offices in the US, mfg is in Taiwan.

Regardless, it's a good product with proactive/ responsive USA based support personnel. I am happy with mine.

A set of traction mats, snatch block, tree strap and 8.5k - 9.5k winch should be fine. Factor some cost for the right recovery gear to go along with it and think about what and when you will be winching..

Guess it depends on how often you'll end up using it. Mine gets used a couple of times per year, so I didn't feel the need to spend $1k or more on it - after a bit of research I settled on an Engo 12k with synthetic line. They stand behind their products and from what I've seen (both in use and in talking to others) the winches are very well built.

Living in South Florida, it looks like the important thing is that it is sealed. Water is everywhere here. I'm going to measure the bumper to see if that TJM unit fits.
