Hi all!

Like a lot of guys here I'm quite large, and the legroom in my BJ70 is minimal.

A friend with an FJ (flatdeck, not cabin) ripped his stock seat out and replaced it with one from an old Toyota van, but since I have passenger space behind me I can't really do that.

Any suggestions for a suitable replacement to create some legroom?

Cheers!

I have a BJ74 and have the same problem. I am planning to extend the slider bars back 3", that way I can use the existing floor mount brackets, saving fabrication time.

Im not 100% on how you will do this but if the sliders are being extended and not supported from underneath they will bend.
Even the stock length extends too far back without support.

IMO it would be better to make a frame that bolts to the floor in the existing holes then bolt the sliders to that,if thats not what you are already contemplating.

I have little-to-no vehicle modding experience, but could one of those hideous red/orange ricer bucket seats be fitted in place of the stock BJ70 driver's seat, and if so should I dare be seen out in public afterwards? :D

Seriously, it'd be great to gain some additional legroom.

you can extend the runners about 2 inches which really does make a difference. maybe Peter will join in here since he has doen this to his 74 series. also, as a side note, the celica seats are VERY comfy...

The seats in my BJ74 were moved back 3" just before I left for ACT 2006. Made a huge difference in the trip. No pictures at this point, however a new bracket was made up for the sliders to attach too. Still have the stock seats.

Thanks all. I guess the only issue I see arising from moving the existing seat back on the (extended) rails is that it will cut into the already mightily cramped space between front and back rows.

I don't carry passengers back there too often, but just often enough that I can't rip out the rear bench, dang it, so was kind of hoping somebody would know of a suitable 'skinny' seat to take the place of the stock one.

Yes...that would be a problem. I solved it by turfing the rear seats and building a drawer system for the rear. It is now a permenant two seater.

to me, the rear seats in a 73/74 series are a waste of space. there is NO leg room and if you have kids the getting them in and out is a pain to say the least. eitehr turf the seats and build a box as Greg did or go to side mount seats like i did in ol'smokey...

My kids past by the window ! ;)

Does anybody off hand know if the 60 series seats are compatible with the 70 series brackets?

I have a line on some nice aftermarket bucket seats that are bolt in to the 60/62 series brackets. I don't have a 60 series close to measure.

Thanks:cheers:

Probably no… without some brackets works or adaptation.

As for the 70 series seats, there are not all interchangeable between each other, i.e. the BJ70 seat are not bolt on in a HZJ79 model.

Yeah, I have an HZJ-75 that had BJ70 seats transplanted into it. But those seats have seen better days:grinpimp:

I have fitted the driver and passenger side with Subaru wrx seats bought them from a scrappy had to fabricate new beakers but the fit prefect in my 70 series and ate so comfy driver side is hight adjustable plus there more space between to fit my freezer . They wear out of a 2009 model

Ohhh and plus the passenger seat is adjustable so that people can jump in the back with no problem

My 1985 bj70 had after market seats installed while it was still in Japan. They are on a custom frame that I believe is not only further back but substanially taller. I'll post up a pic. I"ll be parting this thing out shortly so they may be up for sale as well.

make sure posting pics of the braket
