Went to Discount tires to buy the BFG AT's 285 75 R16 tires today. The guy behind the counter said they wouldn't fit. They brought in a few other guys, one who said he tried it and it didn't work. So I told them to try it on one of the fronts and at least see if it would work. Told them I was willing to buy 5 tires and none if they didn't fit. The put it on one of the fronts and we turned the wheel both ways with no problems. Heard them say, "I'll be damned." So they start working on my 5 tires.

Asked the salesman for the 2 year Road Hazard service BFG provides with a set of 4 tires. He doesn't know anything about it. We got to his web site and I show him, and again, "I'll be damned"

Tires work great same type of tire I run on my FJ40. Nice ride on road.

Now to get Christo's compensator!

Thought I would share in case anyone else gets the BS from a tire store that 285's won't fit.

FWIW: I paid $174 per tire installed, mounted and balanced.

Wow, my experiences at Discount have always been good. You must have been to the worst Discount Tire ever!

They actually were very nice and polite and did good work. They thanked me for the information I gave them. I would shop there again. It just pays to be an educated buyer.

I got the same response when I put 285s on my the 94 LC I owned.

Luckily for you that you had them put them on a LX450 -- they have the correct torque specs for a LX, but not for the LCs with alloy wheels (in most Discount/Americas tire stores -- ask Mark Brodis all about his fun with Discount Tires :D)

Just wait 'til you go in and tell them you want 315s...
"...uh...on a Lexus?"

Discount doesn't even question me anymore......if I say they will fit......they will fit and they will install em. They s*** when I put 33x9.5's on stock Cruisers.....:D

they let me use thier grinder to trim the calipers on the 60 when putting the fawkin 4WPs wheels on.

Ken, make sure those monkeys didn't torque the piss out of your lug nuts. I believe the official spec is 70 foot pounds for our aluminum rims, and I bet their computer told them to crank them down to 120. When they did mine, I had to gently override the kid's previous instructions, after I explained to him that all I pretty much do is discuss and research Toyota Land Cruisers he figured I must know what I'm talking about. wait, what did I just say? crap, I'm a loser.

Anyway I also remember Mark Brodis had a similar experience, he even tried to get Discount to change the torque specs in their computer.

Hey Romer,
If you get a chance could you post a pic of those tires...I have the same rig and would like to see how it looks...thanks

Yes, it was all a bunch of fun!! Lucky for me, all I was bitching about was the specs in their computer (not getting them to replace anything), all they finally admitted to is that they had messed up and my vehicle should have been in the computer as a LX450, it was in there as Land Cruiser (originally I brought in rims seperate, so they just mounted tires to the rims, didn't see what vehicle it went on, I just told them a '97 Land Cruiser). I have tried many times to point out the differences, exact specs, etc...nothing has helped, my guess is partly because I'm telling them to torque them less, which liability-wise is iffy for them, if I was saying to torque them to 165 ftlbs, they'd probably be happy to. It's like argueing with a bunch of ferrets or something...grrrrr...

The last time I got tires at Discount was on my wife's car, pissed me off, I had them knock the price down, and then refused their road-hazard warranty, it was retarded watching them try to get me to buy it, to the point where it actually looked bad for them infront of other customers..heheh. Not sure I will buy anything from them again...ironically though buying tires off thier website with free shipping is actually a pretty good deal at times, cheaper than TireRack many times.

I've never had beef from them on installing with my torque spec (versus the computer). They just put on the receipt that I requested a different value.

Discount got chased out of town here last year. Couldn't compete with Les Schwab, I guess.

Here you go! Stock suspension and plenty of clearance. No rubbing when turning the tires.

Thats just road dirt from winter weather. No wheeling in this yet. But then there is the FJ40

I had similiar experience when I went to get my tires. I told the manager that I wanted the 315 BFGs mounted on the cruiser. At first the guy was wondering if I knew anything at all about tires. He offered to show me the difference between the 315s and 275s. I told him no, that I would like the 315s. He was saying how they won't fit and its going to be waste of time. I told him just do it and it will be fine. So he had the guys put them on and at the end he was completely shocked. He said he never knew that 315s would fit on the truck.

Then, came time for the torquing of the lug nuts. After confirming w/ Cdan I asked him again to not torque at what their computer recommends which was 120. Instead I asked to have it at 70. At first he was not going to but I had to show him that again this was something he was not aware of for our trucks.

Overall the experience was good. I would buy from them again. Just had to tell them a little about our truck to make the transaction happen.

I didn't check the torque rating, didn't know about it. I'll call tomorrow and ask. Just curious why the difference and what happens if they roque to 100 or 120

95-97 Alloys are torqued at 76 ft-lbs

If you need back-up on the torque spec., it's in your owners manual. Let them argue with that.

I wouldn't be too concnered in your case. They have the correct torque sqecs for the LX450.

I think where their confusion lies is that their computer and charts show the Land Cruisers as having steel wheels, which has the higher torque setting for the lugs. The LX 450s all had alloy wheels (steelies were never an option with the Lexus).

Every Americas/Discount Tire store I've been to (5 different shops) has had the correct torque settings for the LX.
