Got in a hurry finishing up a landscaping project today and didn't latch the trailer onto the ball. Block wall, 15 yards of dirt, etc and I have a huge utility trailer I've been using to haul it all over the last few weeks of spare time. So I was fired up at finally taking the misc. rock, dirt and weeds to the dump. Put 1000lbs of it at the very back edge so I could easily push it off at the dump.

As I got to the stop sign leaving my neighborhood, the unsecured trailer tongue popped up and snubbed up on the chain so hard I thought I'd been rear ended. I could see the trailer was loose in my mirror, and hit the gas to keep that tongue from punching through the tailgate (my rear load and tandem axles meant the tongue was waving around about waist high). The yank caused it to hit me a good one. Trying to mitigate the damage, I tried to match the trailer's natural deceleration with the 80's speed, finally driving half off the road to get the trailer to slow down by dragging in the gravel and weeds. All this time the tongue was describing lazy figure 8s ranging as high as the back window and I knew another expensive hit was on the menu if I used the truck to slow it down.

When I got it stopped, the trailer had hit only the one time but I was really bumming as i walked back to survey the damage - sure the tongue on that 1800lb trailer (w/o the load) would punch deeply into the sheetmetal. The cruiser gods were clearly on duty. The heavy hit was right on the aluminum "diamond plate" piece on the stock bumper and right on its strongest point - the curve at the top. It nearly punched through it and bent the lip on the trailer's tip to aptly demonstrate how hard the hit was.

So, got lucky on this one and I'm going to leave the part in place as a "stupidity reminder".

Nice luck... and good job keeping your head. I imagine a good number of people would have slammed on the brakes.

I hate towing. I'm always nerve racked even pulling the smallest possible trailer.

A similar thing happened to me last weekend. I loaded up the trailer with tree limbs and shrub cuttings and unloaded at the dump. Everything went as planned until I came driving down the street and forgot the trailer was back there. On an impulse I decided to back into the drive to load up the dogs for a ride. Trailer jack-knifed and I heard a huge thud and saw the trailer against the LR quarter panel. Oh cr@p! Got out to survey the damage and the trailer had hit the Slee rear bumper and slid into the flare and rear mud flap. No damage to the bumper [busted up the trailer though :D ] and the mud flap was coming off next weekend anyway. A little "alignment" on the flare and Pristine is good to go. Whew.

Good luck Doug, glad to hear that was the extent of the damage. I thought I was the only one that did stuff like that

I've often worried that I'd forget to tighten the latch on my trailer but it's never happened yet.

B - I did exactly that same trick in the my 60 a few years ago. I was pissed off about something and backup too fast and jack-knifed the trailer. The top of the trailer dinged my rear Q panel. I left the ding there as well - as a reminder that haste makes waste.

errr.... did a bunch of brush cutting, had to back the trailer in a narrow spot many times, starting out at an odd angle, and all uphill....
GABANG!
sheesh....

The Cruiser gods were definitely smiling down on you Doug!

Beowulf -- I did almost the same thing in the '94 cruiser I owned -- ended up smashing the fiberglass rear flare. Glad my '97 flares are rubber...a huge improvement.

Doug -
Thanks, just bought a trailer, hopefully your story will help me remember to latch up. I'm a little absent minded anyway.
My stupid 80 owner trick of the week.....Last night, after installing the Hoppy trailer harness, I drove to the gas station. When I got back I couldn't find my mag light anywhere. Saw a strange glow coming from underneath the LC.....I had left it on and sitting on top of the spare tire carrier.

I tow quite a bit with my GMC so I am quite used to it and never really had any issues.

Mostly horse trailers, car haulers with 2-3 vehicles, and the occassional monster U-haul trailer to help friends move.

Most of these towing discussions get me to thinking about towing...if you plan on pulling the loads most of you describe, the 80 would be perfect.

Anything larger (boats, large trailers, etc) and I would suspect the danger zone goes up a bit. The length and power of the GMC is literally a life saver...

"Hauling a horse back from U of Auburn after a very expensive operation (ugh)....rain storm on the highway reduces visability to near 0. Semi in front of us pulls a jack knife...the GMC locks up to react, the tranny automatically engine brakes and downshifts to compensate (gotta love tow mode). Long story short...stopped the GMC, dual axle horse trailer with a 1400 lb animal in it in a VERY short distance."

Towing takes practice. Make sure you do.

Why tow a horse when you could just throw it in the back seat? :D

Glad you and the cruiser took 'minimal' damage. One good practice I have is to lock down the latch on the hitch ball. You can always just stick in something, but a lock also helps prevent theft of the whole damn trailer. Knock on wood - I've never had any issues towing and have become fairly proficient backing the damn thing into its parking space at the church as well.

What a bonehead!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

I guess you never listened to Dad either! Wow that's great no major damage was done. You almost had to buy a bumper with tire carrier to hide it ;). At least you had chains, I've seen a few trailers flipped in the ditch. From my boss and fellow contractors I learned to always cross your chains under the trailer tongue to help catch it if it gets loose, and to wind up the chains to shorten them to just long enough. I'm amazed I never forgot to lock something down from all the 5am hookups in cold rain or calf-deep mud. And yes, always pin that latch down.

ID, I'm beginning to think that you are good at thinking before you react.

I can't wait for the next story in a month or two. ;) :)

Yikes, glad you esacaped so lightly. I think everyone has a stupid trailer trick. Here's mine. A few years ago I was trying to back my boat trailer into one of those self serve car wash kiosks in a very tight spot and had finally gotten it lined up after several attempts when some guy in a jetta snuck into the spot and gave me a "Who me" smirk. I was so p$ssed off in general I decided to just pull out of there and forget it and wash it at home. However I was so mad I forgot I had the trailer and turned too tightly out of the lot. Wham. I drove my boat into a concrete wall and staved in the hull nicely at the deckline. Ok now I'm really mad especially because the Jetta guy is now smirking some more. I take a few breaths, calm down, then drive it home. As I'm thinking over the whole stupid incident though I get madder and madder and now I am driving too fast down a potholed road and blue smoke starts coming out of the trailer and I had busted the trailer axle. Spent the rest of the day waiting for a flatbed tow truck big enough to tow the boat and trailer. To top it off I had called my insurance adjuster that morning to make sure the insurance on the boat was still valid. Imagine how fun it was to call again to say I had just had an accident.

Doug,

If the tongue weight had been correct you would have been a bit better off ::)

I'm damn glad you got out with what you did. I do have a spare plate that I removed when I installed my Slee rear bumper. I can send it to you for the postage.

 D-

Whoa - thank heaven for big boats!

Idaho - guess this may be the last time you'll post a bonehead move :flipoff2:

In all seriousness, all of us that tow have an enlightened awareness of saftey awareness and the precautions we must take and check to tow safely. Thanks for sharing your plight......now back to giving you shiat. hehehe :o

Screw the pics, I'd love to see video of this thing. Guess brains run in the family eh? :flipoff2: :D

Seriously, glad you're ok.

Good thing that guy locked the coupler. 8)
