Hello legends
Got a bit of an issue with my 1979 BJ40 starter stuck on. I hopped in to start it like normal and it stayed cranking and I can’t get it to stop. Tried turning the ignition off and back on with no change. Even with no keys in the ignition it keeps cranking. If I cut the fuel and pull the battery cable the engine dies and the starter stops. But with the engine off, no keys in the ignition, and as soon as I hook the battery up it starts cranking again. Seems like there is an electrical problem somewhere?
-Maybe time for a new ignition switch?
-Maybe a loose wire inside the solenoid making contact with something and shorting it in the on position?
I checked all the grounds and everything seems tight.
I tried the “hit it” technique and nothing. Will try it again with a bigger hammer But it seems that should only work with an already running engine? At least how I understand it.
Not sure if this is relevant but when I reconnect the battery cable it arch’s like nobodies business. Pretty much has blown away all of my positive terminal post.
Any help would be great.
