Most likely what is wrong is the back lash of the you breaking your axle, broke what ARB calls the piston. It is plastic and this has happened to me twice once in a rear full floater when engaging it under a heavy load and once in the front from a broken axle shaft.

Part # 9 .. ?

Hi All:

Hate to say it, but this sounds a bit like a case I helped fix a couple of years ago.

FJ60 with rear Air Locker troubles post-Rubicon. The Air Locker would not dis-engage, acted like a spool.

It had morphed into a spool of sorts . . . one of the "spider gears" had busted-off a tooth, which had fallen in between the gears and prevented the normal differential action, and dis-engagement of the Air Locker mechanism.

Yes, it required pulling the third member to diagnosis this problem! :frown:

Good luck!

Alan

that's correct ..

when both hubs are locked .. like a Cruiser with the front diff locked .. :frown:

We got a winner!!!!

Have short side twisted inner splines sure they where holding all front axle traction.

Still need to open the ARB to determinate the parts I need to order

Any write up on how to open the ARB?

BTW hubs where holding great even without chromo hub gears

Experience and wisdom advice ..

What I should do .. keeping in mind recent ARB failure ( it maybe from the broken inner axles situation ) .. ?

What I think it's .. if something it's about to break I choose hubs .. instead, birfs, axles or even ARB ..

Then .. I should put chromo inner hub gears ?

Another question .. should I replace this twister spline inner .?

comments are appreciated ..

Chromo hub gears are not a bad Idea as if one bust and stripps the splines on the outside of the bif bobby wont warranty it. if you bust one of his chromo ones he will warranty them.

ABSOLUTELY replace the one with twisted splines, it is a time bomb waiting to go at this point.

Those are not Bobbys axles anyways.

Not the spacer block, the cross shaft that locates the spider gears.

Well, test TG's "Lifetime warranty" on the shaft first.

Get a bunch of ARB parts and fix that up.

Go hit trail, break some more.

Oh I thought he was using the first batch of bobbys 27 spline axles.

I was .. those was the first ones that I broke .. ( inners )

Fellows .. I'm looking for torque specs of the carrier bearing cap bolts ? ( 81lb/ft ? )

thanks !

David

81 is good, IIRC I stopped at 75 cause that was the highest setting on my torque wrench.

Question anyone else running 40" or around in cruiser axles with ARB locker?

Not with ARB but with a Detroit and an Aussie Locker with 18/39.5/15 boggers.

I tore up one Detroit already from when I twisted all the splines off of the 30 longfield inner axle the shock load took something out in the Detroit, I havent taken it apart yet but it no longer locks, it tries but I can hold the tire still by hand if on jacks if I apply some strong force.
