Hey guys any engine experts please weigh in on this. I'm planning to pull the engine replace the HG and timing chain because I'm fairly certain I have a slight leak due to minor coolant losses. I've not noticed any overheating. The engine has 191k miles so I figure might as well plan on doing the timing chain and whatever else turns up while it's out.

Now the issue I'm trying to determine is if...
A: rebuild the engine to the factory spec and put a SC on it in stock condition.
B: rebuild the engine as a stroker maybe pushing it to 5-5.2 L and forego the SC... Just relying on more displacement.

Most likely I'll be using a shop for most of the work. So if you guys have recommendations on quality shops that know this engine please let me know your thoughts.

Thanks

I am going off memory but I think the striker kit is like $11,000, which doesn't include any machine work.

Not to mention you're also going to need some type of additional engine management to get fueling right after increasing the displacement so much.

Should have mentioned it....I'm in TN... I was talking to ACC in Atlanta about swapping a 3B in my 40 and doing some other stuff but the wife put the brakes on that project until I get the 97 running tip-top for her. You know she is the one driving it and complains about power so I'll oblige and get it built for her before doing the 40.

I haven't really asked ACC but I guess I just assumed they were less engine rebuilding and more paint body etc.

Yes and the TRD is what I'll use if I go that route. I wanted to go with more displacement over SC to get power through the entire range rather than just at mid to high rpms. Please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Ok... So after talking to a couple of folks that I know local that are engine specialists for drag race cars. One guy tells me a better option maybe do less stroke such as the 101 mm piston rather than a 105mm that I think it would take
to get to 5L. Still getting more power low and more average power across the entire range with a small stroke increase and hopefully not have to worry about new ECU going the 5L route. Then put a SC on it to get mid to high rpm boost.

From what I can tell this would fall in with a 4.6L displacement. It also allows a combo of increased displacement and boost rather than just relying on 100% displacement or 100% boost.

Would any one agree with his take? Does this make sense and sound like less custom work than just going the big stroke engine?

Boring is increasing the piston diameter, stroking is increasing the throw on the crank. There are some options on bore, but not much on stroke. John

Like I was saying Brian Crower offers a stroker kit. It gets you to 5.0L, and it's around $9-11k. To get to 5.2L, you're going to have to bore and stroke and you're looking at some serious cost.

Ya I'm just not good at remembering everything from lengthy conversations but yes the guy told me a littl about bore and stroke..... Now you guys see why I need some help!

I just looked at the Crower stroker kit and it's roughly $6,800 for the 5L.

That's not a terribly bad deal considering SC are around $4k.

Anyone using these that could speak to quality or issues that you've noticed?

For the amount of money you will dump into rebuilding and charging or stroking the 1FZ, you could have a 400hp chevy LS based V8.

Lot's of escalades running around with LQ9s and L92s. Even a 5.3l is a huge improvement.

Food for thought.

I've thought about it Rockrod and its definitely tempting to just buy a crate engine and call it done but I guess right now I would like to keep the I-6 fz engine and keep it all Toyota.

Installation expense for the TRD supercharger may be significantly less than for the Crower Crank.

You will have several thousand in JUST machine work. I literally just went thru this. I too considered the Crower setup and thought against it.

The S/C I got used for under $2k and I'm installing myself. In fact all the difficult s*** is already installed when the motor went in.

What setup do you have in your truck nlxtacy?

I've been reading a lot today and I'm going to do some more research before I decide. Still need to find a knowledgable engine shop.

Some preliminary thoughts I've had instead of the stroker option is to just refinish the stock head assembly throw on some ARP head studs for a Supra i think the # was 2JZ(??) then add a beefier HG. Add SC and tune to 8-10 psi.

Sound ok?

4.6 S/C'd. Here is the build out: https://forum.ih8mud.com/80-series-tech/553208-engine-rebuilding-options-s-c.html
