Strange whistling sound from engine? (1 Viewer)

I notice that whistle after I had all the belts replaced yesterday, and was told by the Firestone mechanic that the sound was coming from the alternator.

Did your Firestone mechanic install new cogged belts? If yes, that is probably the source of your noise. If you are certain this is not a belt noise, then the alternator idler pulley has been known to get noisy and need replacing. They are not expensive. A new alternator is spendy.

Resurrection of the post.

I have a 97 LX with a similar noise. It reminds me of those ribbed toys you swing around and they make a very distinct sound.

The EGR system has a similar line.

Me thinks my EGR is stuck open and causing this issue.

I also get a (whoosh) sound when I first start it that sounds like an EGR issue to me was well.

Have any of you been able to resolve this?

If the egr were stuck open, your engine would not be able to idle or would idle very roughly if the egr leak was tiny. If you have a friend drive while you are at the rear seating area I'm quite sure you will hear this whistle coming most audibly from the right rear corner of the cargo area which means the noise is coming from your tail pipe.
I have owned three 80's and the second one was the only one that did this. It's not uncommon but don't ask me what causes it because it seems to be a mystery. Search "exhaust whistle". Either live with it or start spending money.

I didn't read all 2 pages of replies so I'm sorry if this has been covered but my first 80 did this exact thing even though the belts and pulleys were ok. I tried adding some more tension even though the belts never made noise but it would always make that whistling noise under harder acceleration. After a 3-4 months of owning that 80 my idler pulley started making noise so I replaced all 3 belts with Toyota belts and got a new idler pulley for the 2 main belts and the whistling noise went away.
