My '04 makes a peculiar sound when applying the brakes. The sound seems to come from under the hood . It's not pad or caliper related and it doesn't do it every time the brakes are applied. It sounds like a rattlesnake shaking its tail 3 or 4 times then stops. Everything works normally, it just makes this weird sound. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like the common brake booster motor dying. Get ready to rebuild or replace it. Once the alarm went off you need to stop driving.

They are pretty expensive. There is a guy in Rancho Cordova, CA that rebuild it. He list his service on eBay. His price went up quite a bit lately.

Just buy a new master and booster assembly. About $1200 brand new from Toyota and will last another 200k.
Easier, faster and more warrantied than having someone on eBay rebuild it.

Personally I wont trust an unknown person from eBay with my life (brake system). Not to say that his work isn’t great but it isn't Toyota.

Ebay Guy has one for 850 . Brand new for Toyota part 47050-60081 $1350. Timmy the toolman's video shows how including techstream bleeding walk through and zero point calibration walk through.
@Colorado T whatbdid you end up doing? I recently started hearing a pumping noise when pressing the key fob to unlock my 2003 GX470.

And last night for the first time…I heard the brake booster pumping while driving home. Arghhh.
