I bought a 40 this weekend that has a 1f bottom end and a 2f head. I bought it for the parts and don’t intend to use the engine. I am curious how it gets oil to the upper end. The manifold though I can’t figure out what it came from. The outer ends bolt on and the bottom of the manifold bolts on. Anybody ever seen this manifold?

It is probably a 2F head with a 1F rocker assembly from the original F, to maintain oiling.

The question that we're entertaining is what pistons (flat or domed) are under that 2F head (early / open combustion chamber, or later closed-chamber)? There is a casting number on the driver's side of the head, iirc; piston identification is a bit more tricky. Is it a '73 block, with a two-groove pulley on the water pump and crank, for the smog pump?

Thanks all
Some of the stickers on the windows are from a California university. It’s a 76. It is pretty disassembled but I have most pieces. I didn’t get pictures of all the parts that came with it but it has what I think are aftermarket skid plates that cover a lot of the bottom. In that picture you can see a shield below the harmonic balancer…I’ve not seen one of those before. It’s also got shields that cover the back side of the taillights that I haven’t seen before.
Is the smog setup desirable for people restoring these in California?

Yes, you should sell the thermonuclear exhaust manifold to someone in California who really needs that part.

thats exactly what it is. 76-79 california spec

These were only 76-78 in California. 1/79 the Federal models had a CAT. That ended the nuclear reactor exhaust manifold in California. Not sure what special emissions California had different than the Federal models if any but the exhaust manifold wasn't one of them.

Huh?

If the thermo reactor exhaust manifold was a California only emissions item, how can the exhaust manifold not be different than the Federal (49 state) configuration?

Whaa?

please send some pics of the taillight shields - that's new for me
I’ll try to get some when I get back to my shop next weekend. They are sheet metal caps that protect the back side of the taillight from rocks kicked up from the tires. I assumed they were oem pieces but there are lots of bottom shields that I have never seen before. Now I’m thinking the shields may be a aftermarket package. The guy I bought it from I bought it from pointed out the tail light shields or I probably wouldn’t have figured where they went. I bought it disassembled….its going to be a job to sort out where everything goes.

Another strange thing is it had ambulance doors but with a soft top I’m not sure how the upper hinge works. I don’t intend on using the soft top though.

I was being imprecise in my original statement of 76-79 for the california exhaust manifold. It was 1/1976 to 1/1979. I believe @Living in the Past is pointing out that in 1/1979 there was a new component added to both federal and california models (the catalytic converter). At that point the odd california exhaust manifold was dropped and the exhaust manifold for california and federal became the same (at least til 7/1980...not sure how... or if they diverged again beyond that time).

The intake manifolds for federal beyond 1980+ seem to be stamped with different serials and have slightly different port setups but mostly look the same to me. I'm using an 81 intake and exhaust manifold on my 1979.

Tail-light covers....are you just talking about these? I'm not telling you when these were introduced ;)

Those are them. I guess all the fj40s I’ve seen these were taken off or rusted off. I’d guess they were added with the updated square tail lights in 75.

way back in the 1970's CA had their own stricter standards for emissions than the other 49 states. so car makers made 2 versions of their rigs 1 for CA and 1 for the other 49
I remember watching game shows and when giving a car away they all stated it had CA emissions.
things are a lot different now, as manufacturers, make rigs 50 state legal, even tho some states have no emission checks.

This nuclear reactor manifold supplies extra heat to the carburetor, and should be avoided/removed if at all possible. Modern gas is already horrible for carbs and extra heat is never needed.
