I finally found a nice (cheap) donor welded factory wheel with intact clips (now I have five) so I'm ready to have Stockton Wheel weld on some new hoops for them. I don't really know exactly what I want so I thought I'd ask for input and feedback to help guide my decision.

My truck is not stock but I'm looking to keep a largely factory flavor to my modifications. The purpose for the widening is to retain a factory look while enjoying a wider selection of AT tires that can be safely mounted. I think I'll keep the backspacing the same at 3.5" but should I move up to 16" or even 17" diameter wheels?

I think 15"'s would be cutting it close with brake caliper clearance so I'm happy to move up to a larger diameter but don't know if 16" or 17" make more sense with regard to tire availability/selection. Also, what wheel width would allow me to run a 10.5 or 12.5 equivalent metric tire? I'd ultimately like to mount 35" tires on the truck but for the moment, a 33.5" tire is about all I can squeeze under my existing 7' garage door.

I'd love to hear some feedback from folks who have already been down this road. I only get one shot at picking wheel specs and will have to live with the decision for many a year.

Thanks!

Truck is running a 4" Leaf Spring/Shackle lift
The rear wheel wells have been trimmed to run flares
3rd Gen 4Runner calipers and FJ60 front rotors

That’s interesting. I thought folks were moving up to 16 inch tires while retaining factory centers. I’ve tried calling Stockton Wheel but only get a answering machine. I assume they had rings/hoops in several diameters that would accept a 15 inch center. Hopefully I get through to them soon. Thanks for your reply!

Someone did go to 16" with Stockton, I recall seeing it too. The shells tapered down to fit 15" centers. The option I'd go with is Racer's 16" set with hub clips. Imports out of Japan. They're not much wider than stock, but at least rubber options at 16" are more plentiful.

If this was my project I would go 16x8 with 3.25 or 3.5 backspace. That is about perfect for a 285/75/16 tire.

I sent Stockton stock rims from my 40, the cut the centers out and put them into a 16.5 hoop, they were great to work with , now I have 37" tires on stock looking rims.

This truck looks awesome, by the way. : )

Thanks, I think the largest rim Stockton will do utilizing a OEM center is the 16.5, yes tires are getting very limited. Also purchased Racer65 16" rims for another project and they work out great to run a 33"x10.5 BFG, I will post a picture in a little while when I get them on.

I have a box of old hubcaps and went out to grab some to put on the new rims and noticed this difference, does anyone know what the difference? One has a higher rise and one lower.@livinginthepast

Nifski, do you have a build thread on that sweet rig? Amazing job!

@liko , I purchased it from a fellow mudder and have been working out a few bugs as well as adding new front and back bumpers,SPod, led lighting, winch, new cage to raise the seat heights, and just finished the half doors. It is up at Orange 45 getting a few more mods as well as working out an issue with the Orion.

Check out the original build thread by Miker, it's about 45 pages and is amazing, look up 1964 FJ45 LB "RB1 Project"

Of the top of my head I would say that the taller cap is a closed cap that has been field-cut to clear a locking hub.

The tall one appears (to me) to have been cut.
