I Just received a new set of stock steel 15 x 5.5" rims & caps from Toyota for my '72 FJ40. I expected them to be only in primer so had planned on painting them grey but they appear to have a semi gloss black powder coat.
If that is what it is, any paint I could use would be nowhere near as tough as the powder coat.

Is anyone out there running new OEM wheels as received and seeing them start to rust? They look pretty darn good as they are in black.

Thanks.

I bought one new wheel from toyota a couple years ago. It came with black paint on it. I painted mine (all 5) satin black (rustoleum) and put a few coats of clear over the top. It has held up excellent so far here in SE NC.

If you were in the north east I would say you NEED to paint them

I painted a set on the front only and you can definitely see the rust flashing on the reverse side

Do be aware that they will fade and be more of a powdery flat black if not coated
