Where can you buy one of the stock setups for a BJ-40. I have a FJ-40 that I am converting to a HZJ-40. Whouldn't that work with the 1HZ? I like the stock look a little better. Can you get them in the U.S.?

Thanks

Great question guenther65. Hopefully someone will have a lead for us. I found several gauge manufactorers who sell them. The question seems to be that unless the bellhousing for the 3B was taped for a speed sensor then it needs to be wired off of the alternater(somehow). A tech. at Stewart Warner told me this today. He said to contact a alternater shop for varification. Maybe someone here who's what's needed for a tach hookup.Otherwise the diesel tachs are plentiful and reasonably priced. Would prefer a stock one however.

Also talk to a diesel shop. There are some models that read injector pulses....as strange as that sounds.

But most likely a autometer gauge hooked up to your alt will be the way you go.

Keith, for searches, also manipulate the words. Like diesel tach, tach, tachometer, gauges, alt tach,.....etc. If you do a search, pick the diesel section only, or pick search this forum from the top of the page. If you do a general search I suspect it will be a hard thing to pick thru.

Typically I go into the forum I want to search, then pull down the search this forum tool bar. I do not use the search function on the top bar, it searches all the forums in MUD.......too confusing.

look up in a 3B manual where the tach pick-up is located. On the 2H's it is on the bell housing. 1HZ's have the pickup on the fuel pump so the calibration is different. This is why i ended up gogin with teh autometer for may swap. If you have a stock tach lying around it may be worth trying but mine didn't work.

I don't think there is anything wrong with using the alternator as a sender except for the challenges of calibrating it. If you are ok with accuracy give or take 200 RPM it's easy. Closer than that might be more difficult.

FWIW the bellhousing isn't hard to tap, tachs from BJ60s are still farily common. If you can get the dealer to bring in just that aluminum cover you could end up with a clean looking setup.

heres a pic of my tacho..

the sender is a bit dicky.. only works intemittently.. discovered its a pretty common thing for them to not work, where they are on the engine block means they see a lot of crud.. (on the rhd model is on the somewhere behind the blowby tube). havent yet found somehwere that will be able to find a replacement sender that fits in the factory location.
