Installing a new HU in my 99 LC. Also need to replace a speaker, so might as well do them all. I am planning on bypassing the factory amp.

Few questions:
Do you guys know what size speakers for the front and for the rear, as well as what size the tweeters are?

I would like to replace factory with components rather than coaxials since the housing is all there already.

Will I run into issues with the factory sub if I bypass the amp? Honestly I would rather just rip it out but I dont think its worth the trouble haha.

I am planning on buying the receiver wiring harness from crutchfield when i order my HU and my speakers.

I get a nasty interference after installing the head unit. It happens with the vehicle running, and just in accessory. I believe this is an RF interference due to a bad ground. I had tried ground loop isolator on both rca outs for the front and rear speakers with no luck (confirms bad ground theory).

Where have you guys relocated the ground? Straight to the battery? I am having a hard time finding a place to get through the firewall.

Also, who has had issues with a bad wire between (purple and silver- for driver side speaker)? I believe it is pinched, but its going to be a chore to find...the wiring is super tight everywhere. I confirmed this wire is the issue by testing its continuity...

I had similar issues.
Bypassing the factory amplifier solved mine.

The HU gets its ground from through the OEM amp wiring harness. So there are wires you'll need to connect to keep the HU grounded. Or just run a wire from the back of the HU to a good known ground.

The headunit itself mounts to a metal bracket that is attached to a big metal tube....that should be a good ground.

OP stated the plan to bypass amp... Can we get a clarification that amp is indeed bypassed with this particular stereo noise question?

Currently factory amp has not been bypassed. I wanted to avoid running all new wires, but it seems I will need to.

I will pull the sucker apart and try a new ground.

I am used to working on ford trucks and boats... where theres tons of space to add and trace wires... this land crusher is all neat and tidy under the dash :)

You can bi-pass the factory amp without running new wires. You just run wires from your HU to the outs on your factory amp.

Robs page should outline this...

Total brain fart, you are correct. I can just bridge over the amp. I will have to run one new wire for the drivers front speaker though. Ive read that side gets pinched, anyone have an idea about where?

Somebody hit me with some knowledge.... how the heck do I "neatly" get a wire through the firewall.... I seriously couldnt find a place that had anyspace for me to fit a wire.... Can I squeez a coat hanger through and pull a wire back through? I am planning on grounding the headunit to the neg (-) terminal of the battery...

There is no need to run through the firewall if your just replacing your HU and using the bypass harness. If your running a new Amp you'll need to get a line out to the battery in this case.

What is the "bypass harness" ? I am using the hardness crutchfield sent me with the head unit (I can find the P/N if it'll help). This harness uses the factory ground location and I got some wicked interference. I believe the interference to be due to a bad ground, since it occurs when the motor is not running.

Under the glove box there is a nice little rubber seal which you can thread a good sized wire through when/if you add an amp.

....

6.5" (front and rear) with 1" (slightly smaller) tweeters. I just replaced mine with some Polk Audios I've had laying around for years. The Polk db3000 fit nicely in the tweeter grill, after I opened it up with a grinder. I used the factory bracket (with a little double faced tape) to hold the new tweeter, and the cover snapped back on without a problem. The crossover fits next to speaker.

I used this post as a resource:

1" grinding wheel worked well
