So I bought a steering box from e bay that is from a 76 FJ40 and it won’t fit my 10/74 FJ40....whish I had asked first…any way if anyone has a steering box let me know I need one ASAP. Yes I did post this to the wanted section of the group. My old box has some play, if anyone has any sugestions let me know as I need my truck back in action.

Post up a picture of your 'new' steering gear...

Why does it not fit?

Oh, wait....you purchased it off ebay.

It is likely a manual steering gear from a 4x4 Toyota mini truck.....

:meh:

When mounted to the frame the gear box is not angled towards the steering shaft; also the breather is on the opposite end of the steering box. I take it that all manual steering gear boxes for the 40’s are the same. The steering box was listed as a 1976 FJ40 steering gear box and as I assumed (yea I know) that all FJ40 steering boxes were the same I went for it; I only paid $20+ shipping. Any way to adjust my old steering box or is not worth it?

Adjustment procedures are listed in the FAQ.

Post up a pic of what you bought. Now we're curious!

wonder if its from a 55 series they have a different angle but visually look the same good luck

fixed my box

So what I have done is removed all the good parts from the new box and installed them into my old housing. The new box that I won off of ebay was probably from a mini truck, when mounted to the FJ40 pad it did not line up with the steering shaft. I have all the internals swapped over to the old housing and so far everything is working well, however I still need tips on adjustments. If the adjustments are in the FAQ sec then were, as I have looked and have found nothing regarding manual steering box adjustments/rebuilds.
