Steering box rebuild instructions?

Rockauto has it. Pretty sure when I did mine back in May ‘16 that’s where I got it. Watch the YouTube video by bleepin jeep, it’s the best one out there, lighting, speed, almost the exact as ours, lots of great tips in it.
The two control rings for the worm gear are too big tho so get them from your dealer. Then read the thread that @CenTXFJ60 wrote regarding tips we discovered for putting everything together for the vertical shaft (I think that’s the output).

I wish I’d known about this when I did mine Felicity! A. I really like bleepin jeep videos and B. You’re so right about the seals. I ended up redoing mine a couple times and to make sure I knew where each seal was supposed to go, I purchased them from the dealer. There were a couple that were similar in size but not the same, and it was too hard for me to know which generic seal went where without getting the dealer part number and seal. I’ve read a lot of posts and I’ve never heard anyone else complain of this issue so it might just be me. Anyway, cheap insurance and good advise!

Pitman arms are a pain. Cheap pullers won’t work. I had to borrow a snapon from local club member and POP it was off.

Best to get the Pittman removed from the box while it’s still attached to the truck, that’s where most go wrong. I had a cheap puller, I’m a 124lb girl and I left the tire on and it was no sweat.

Just started on mine. Does the pitman arm have to be removed completely, or just at the steering shaft?

Was the rebuild to fix leaks or does the kit replace worn bushings and reduce wear induced slop?

Alternate a puller (loosen nut but keep it on) and several hard hits of a mallet on the round end of the pittman (the end that faces the rear of the truck) to vibrate it down and off the box, then pull box. It’s a bear to pull the pittman w/o the weight of the truck holding it.

I've employed the double hammer trick on things like pitman arms before. Basically hitting opposite sides of the arm on the splined end at the same time...the opposing hammer blows help focus the shock into breaking the seated shaft free. Often works well on tie rod ends as well.

Yeah that taper shape really takes blows of a mallet well. Jiggles the two right apart easily. Mine were actually held together longer because the puller and nut were in the way of allowing the pittman to drop down.

A box is a box. I’m a female, minimal mechanical knowledge and I’d never rebuilt anything and my gear box was my first task back in May ‘16. I followed that video and everything went totally smooth. I had no one holding my hand what’s so ever.

@NikP

I know this is old. Apologies. But would you mind please telling me what you needed the Socket and the waterbottle ziptie hack for in this process? There is a great video from Corsetti Cruisers where in the shop he walks through the entire rebuild and I never observed a special tool needed in the process. I watched and dug up the other Bleepin Jeep video which seems fine that @NeverGiveUpYota called out, it has some helpful tips related to the bearing removal and marking the adjustment setting before uninstalling but is not specific to a Land Cruiser. I am assuming that it must work because a Box is a Box as NeverGiveUpYota called out.

As far as the kit, the Rock Auto Gates kit still exists and is now ~$48 but it does not appear to contain the teflon rings as part of the kit. Part number GATES 351810

I think I found the original Toyota part number for the original rebuild kit and the prices for the Toyota part are all over the place, usually just under $200 USD. I found it for $85 shipped from Japan and placed that order. Once it arrives I will tear mine apart as well.

Really wasn't too bad once I figured out how it all worked. If you order the Gates rebuild kit for $29 you have to deal with all the ball bearings anyway.

I also had to improvise on special service tools (SST) for the Teflon ring expander and compressor. Zip ties around a plastic water bottle and a socket.

@taoofbean as I understand teflon seals, they can be compressed back into their original shape and they'll retain it while you assemble things. You have to stretch the seal to go on and it's not like a rubber o-ring where it will spring back into its original shape/size. The water bottle and socket simply compresses the teflon seal and coaxes it back into shape for assembly.

To answer my own question, after the fact and for others, you need the water bottle or zip ties or something to recompress the teflon back into shape, it stretches to install it, and get it into the seal, otherwise, it will sit proud of the indent it is supposed to sit within and as you slide everything back together, that 1 mm overhang will catch and get cut, tearing your teflon ring on reinstall. I ended up using a process of compressing with zip ties and then gentle dental pick persuasion to coax the teflon ring to stay in the channel on reinstall, It is tricky and I can easily understand how they get torn. The teflon sits on top of the new O ring and both together tend to push the teflon above the line so that it creates a seal, but this allows the teflon to get sheared off.
