Hello everyone. I moved to Austin a year ago and I am looking for a source for steel in the Austin area. Looking to do some tube work and some body work.

Thanks

-Mike

Welcome to Austin.

There are a couple of sources in Austin. There's Westbrook Metals (658 Canion, Austin, TX 78752) and Metals4U (15324 North I H 35, Austin - (512) 879-4575) that I've used.

If you are in South Austin, I use South Austin metals, they are always cheaper than westbrook. Not sure if they stock DOM tube though, although they can probably get it. I usually just buy sheet and square tube from them.

Nice guys 1-2 man shop, give them a call. They are off industrial/south congress area.

Yeah, Westbrook is pricey, but they have a drops section where you can get small pieces for cheap. It's near the loading dock where the guy cuts your metal with the band saw.

I've bought from these guys 2-3 times also. friendly, quick and prices are not too bad.

Thanks Guys.
Actually, I meant to say I moved to Austin 3 years ago. Just started working on the cruiser again. Damn its hot here but I think I'm finally use to it.

Still have to get the cruiser registered. I havent been driving it at all since I got to Austin.

Good to know there are people in Austin that actively use this board. There were a ton of people in Colorado that I would meet up with.

I grew up in the mountains in Colorado. About 20 miles south west of Evergreen. The cruiser was my dads and I bought it from him about 7 years ago and started building it to do some mild to moderate rock crawling. Now I am working on the body with my son. If I ever plan on driving it in Texas during the summer, I'm going to have to put AC in it.

Anyway, here are a few pictures of a wheelin trip I took in Montrose Colorado a few years ago.

On the topic, does anyone know of a scrapyard around town that is open to the public. I'm always seeing guys on the welding forums picking up all sorts of cool scraps, but none of the recyclers I have talked too seems willing to let me dig though their steel pile.

I've had good luck at CMC Recycling (formerly Amp Recycling) on Howard Lane.

Cmc Recycling: North
1704 Howard Ln, Austin, TX 78728-7713
(512) 251-3407 ‎

If you do go, stop by Mauricio's pallet recycling business right around the corner on Hydro Street and check out his BJ70 and FJ55.
