Hey guys....Im taking my truck to a custom fabricator in the next few weeks in order to get a front bumper done, and I am wanting to know if anyone has anyone ever attempted something like steel fender flares? My plastic ones are destroyed. And I was thinking that maybe something could be fabbed up that looks something like bushwacker flares but thicker and more heavy duty. Could this even be done? What problems would I run into? Thanks a lot ahead of time.

I would think that the flares could last then but then it would be the connection to your truck and the actual truck that will take the abuse then. If ur hitting them hard theyll hit the body hard. Now maybe if its branches that have caught your or broke your flares maybe but if not I would think it would put damage elsewhere. Atleast my thinking.

Exactly. That's why a lot of people use rubber or some other sort of flexible flare on the domestic vehicles.

I would love to see someone produce a rubber flare that looks identical to the OEM one, and bolts up in the same spots.

I agree with the other posters. The flares take some hits. A steel flare would transfer the energy to the body. The only way I would consider it is if you could anchor them to something solid or mount them as a protection bar with a gap between the bar and the body. But that would be fugly.:whoops:

Lance at Iron Pig makes steel flares. Don't know if he makes them for an 80, but he does for a 40 for sure.

Someone posted a link to an ebay auction for bushwhacker-style "pocket" flares a week or two ago. They looked very cool...I think they ship from Australia.
