OP, '94 gives you the hardiest transmission so I would not hesitate to pull the trigger on a well scrutinized rig, 95+ has benefits but nothing overly important IMHO.
Yea. That's kind of the balance for me I think. 95+ would be great if it works out. If 94 is more convenient for me and it's well cared for (since I can't drag the hubby and kiddo all over the place for cars) then it'll be just fine.
 
I'm not much into wrenching, very much a rookie at that. I was hoping to have an LC to start learning some of that stuff.
Any 80 would be a great vehicle to learn how to turn wrenches on. They're pretty simple and nothing is too packed in to make it inaccessible.

Yes, only on android platforms…which I didn’t have. But I just bought a small cheap handheld tablet off amazon and it works great. That way I still have full function of my iPhone and Apple CarPlay (upgraded head unit) and the engine/car diagnostics on the android handheld device.

Plus the ‘94 has the cooler curved dash and steering wheel! Mine is currently in pieces, but you get the overall feel of it.

Matter of taste of course, to me the updated 95+ interior is worth a significant premium, more so than most of the other differences mentioned here :)

The '95+ interior also has a bunch of empty sockets to put repurposed hazard switches to turn on various electrical devices.

Yea pretty much ☺️. PO did some work on the window regulator for the driver side rear, the window works great. I reinstalled the door panel today. All the window switches work on the driver door master switch, except that driver side rear, so I'll have to look into that sometime. But first, I'm getting the transfer case leak addressed and a good detailing of the interior.
Trying to narrow down what I want to work on first is the hardest part :)

Since you're going to drive this mostly on the street, may I suggest looking at headlight upgrades because the stock halogens leave a lot to be desired, especially by modern standards.
Yea. The halogens are very dim. I definitely want to convert to LEDs, I may need to look into that next. Debating on getting the quad headlight assemblies, straight away or just waiting for a bit until I get a few other things down first. I'm considering also redoing the carpeting throughout.

I've had my Cruiser for 12+ years. My advice, decide what you want from the vehicle first. Overland, rock crawler, daily driver, etc. Build a list of upgrades and then prioritize the upgrades either based on need, cost, or desire.

I drove for several years with no AC. One time driving home on some backroads in the rain, my windows were fogging up so badly I couldn't see anything. When I wiped the glass, it would fog up again within seconds. Fixing the AC moved to the top of my list after that.

You've got a long ways to go. Don't forget about required maintenance on 30+ year old vehicle.

That is great advice. For now, I know initially it'll be my weekender/joy ride vehicle with plans for light overland down the road. I have a 3 year old so nothing crazy for me. This is my classic car, so I'm working on things to make driving it fun/enjoyable (not that it isn't already) but things like below:
- refreshing carpet
- new seatbelts
- new headlights (or just LED bulbs) still deciding. I can't stand the halo look headlight assemblies, so looking to see if there are other options.
- likely new stereo with back up cam
- mobile ham radio set up
- speakers (maybe)

I may need to address the driver seat at some point too. The foam cushion is "shedding" from underneath a little.

It's kind of things I'd always wanted to do to other cars I've owned over the years, but never got a chance too.

Absolutely yes, not forgetting about required maintenance ;). Which is why I'm getting the xfer case leak fixed and rear passenger wheel bearing to start. It's already got an new radiator in it, new hoses, power steering pump, as preventative maintenance. Thankfully, The PO really set me up with a good vehicle.

  • refreshing carpet - remove the seats and spray it with Dawn and a pressure washer. My carpet went from a possible source of swine flu to 90% new quality carpet.
  • new seatbelts - remove and wash in Dawn. If they don't retract, tighten spring, if the hang up random, clean the check ball, if they are slightly shredded, melt the hairs with a lighter.
  • new headlights (or just LED bulbs) still deciding. I can't stand the halo look headlight assemblies, so looking to see if there are other options. - I like Depo housings but this only gets you down the eventual path of HID/LED retrofits.
  • likely new stereo with back up cam. - Double DIN options and backup cams are everywhere.
  • mobile ham radio set up. - I like Baofeng cause they are cheap, portable, and programmable.

The LED bulbs in the factory housings are barely any better than halogen. Their focal point is different than halogen and you get a lot of stray light and cold spots in the spread. IMO, there's two ways to go about getting more light in a controlled manner- either a projector retrofit or the quad headlight conversion with Holley RetroBright headlights. I'm personally a fan of the projector retrofit using four Morimoto Mini H1 projectors. You get four low and four high beams, each putting out something like 3200 lumens. Throw 55W ballasts at it and you get another 20% worth of light. It's not an easy or a cheap way to go (neither are cheap, actually), but good lighting is never cheap.

Specter Off Road has foam and upholstery kits.
