Here's the basics of my problem. I have a 78 with a 73 engine. About 2 years ago I went to start it and it just "clicked". The starter was getting power but wasn't engaging. At that time I also had a sticky ignition switch that stayed on when I was trying to figure out what was going on with the starter. It didn't take long before just about every wire in the engine compartment was melted and I had a small fire going. I got the fire put out and got it towed home and let it sit for a long time. Last summer I took it completely apart to fix some rust and repaint along with a few other things. This summer I finished putting it back together and rewired it. As of a couple of weeks ago I was pretty sure I had it done and ready to go. As far as I could tell everything was working. I turned the key and low and behold "click".
So far I have tried a new starter and new battery and I am still only getting a click when I turn the key. I can also turn the belt so I know the engine is not seized. I've gotten it to turn a couple of times but barely and it went back to clicking almost immediately. It seems like the solenoid is engaging but is not turning and is also not dis-engaging. If I turn the belt after I try starting I can hear a faint clink as the solenoid disengages.
Sorry for the lengthy explanation, but I'm at a real loss here and could really use some ideas.
Thanks
