Straight answer - nothing. Can anyone explain the wiring difference between an '81 fj40 2f OEM starter and the gear reduction fj60 starter part number 28100-60070-84? And what needs to be done to wire this correctly without making magical smoke?

Roger that. I really appreciate it. Thank You for clearing that up. Sounds like I'm good to go. ManStraight answer - nothing.
That said - if your battery cable is aftermarket and just reaches the direct drive starter, you will need a longer battery cable. The excite wire (+12v feed from harness to starter will also fit however will not have the terminal housing to 'clip' into the harness, but is not needed, you can just tighten up the female spade so it doesn't slip off. The locking terminal housing is easily added by removing the heatshrink and installing a 1pin, uninsulated locking housing....available on almost any Toyota in the junkyard or new from your favorite yazaki, sumitomo, etc dealer.
Your '81 will not have the coil excite wire as it was phased out by that year where the earlier trucks will have a loose wire to be tucked up.
