I have heard that you can use other landcruiser starters in a fj40 which are better. Any recommendations for a F motor with a 4 speed bell housing?

Georg (orangefj45 here on MUD) sells them for less ;)

x3 on the 60 series gear reduction starters. I fried 3 or 4 stock starters on my 76 over a 5 year period back in the 90's untl I found out about these. Had mine 12 years now and it still works great.

if you order a re-man starter for a FJ40 from Toyota......you get the GR starter regardless.

even my 1964 45LV......takes the GR starter

Been checking part numbers to upgrade the starter on my 82 FJ45 Troopy and it seems they're the same as 87 FJ62 starters. How do I know the later model cruisers has the gear reduction if the part numbers are the same?

The part number I've found is 28100-60070

Also, for a newbie question: how does the gear reduction help?

82 FJ45 came with gear reduction. it's a lot smaller so you can tell by looking at one.

The advantages are smaller motor, less current draw, more torque.
Disadvantages are no feed for bypass resistor, and different sound (some prefer the old school sound of a direct drive starter).

My FJ40 now has an oddly 'modern' starting sound, but the old one cranked like a tired old tractor (and I've owned a few of those...). You might also gain about 1 MPG by ditching the older, heavier starter ;-)

Hello, hopefully someone can help me. I know this is an old thread but I have a 81 FJ43 with a 2f and I really need to starter badly. I keep seeing about the fj60 with the gear reduction would fit the F engine, but does anyone have a part number for the correct fj60 gear reduction starter that would fit a 2f? I wasn't sure it was a different starter for the fn2f engines. Hopefully someone can clarify this for me . I appreciate it. Thank you very much. Oh and my coil does not have The external resistor I upgraded to a new coil from sor with the internal resistor so that should just be plug and Play for this starter, correct.

Thank you very much
