Location
just moved to cairns , Qld
The truck:
Stock - 89' LJ71 SWB that has a 2LT , alloy case 5 speed & noisey T/case , front & rear 8" open diffs with coils all round, solid rotors front with 4 spot calipers , rear drum brakes , 15 x 7 alloys with 29.5 x 9.5 x 15 , crappy stainless bullbar & rear tow bar with tow mounts

The Plan:
Planning to build a Expedition/Exploration 4x4 that is very versatile , don't want a hardcore offroad vehicle - something in between .

Front axle :
Powertrax "No Slip" in the 8" diff , run new upgraded wheel & diff bearings , possibly upgraded " CV/Birfield" , upgraded vented & slotted rotors with 4 spot calipers minimum & braided brake hoses , shorter or re-disigned steering arms to clear bigger rims .

Rear axle;
Build a full floater Hilux 8" "Beam" axle , Powertrax " No Slip" or LSD in the diff , Upgraded bearings & seals thru out , modified axles from another full float toyota , Vented & slotted rotors & 4 spot calipers with braided brake line.

Suspension :
2" Body lift to clear taller engine ( made out of 2" thick steel/alloy plates to sit on top of body mounts , rubber on chassis - not fond of the standard lift kits ), 2+ lift in suspension , upgraded coils & shocks , bigger pitman ,etc

Drivetrain;
Blueprinted 14BT ,- possibly block bored out to 15B spec ( 4.1 ltr ) with 15B liners & custom forged Pistons @ around 16.0-16.5:1 , ported head with roller rockers , entire engine "Cryogeniced" & certain parts HPC coated , upgraded valvetrain , running 2/ Garrett GT25 VTN's turbo's OR 1 larger GT30-35 VTN , large bar and plate intercooler out front , LPG/Propane injection

H55# gearbox
fully rebuilt with New upgraded heavyduty bearings , Synchro's , gaskets & seals, etc gearbox internals "Cryogeniced" & electro polished .

Transfer with PTO - rebuilt with New heavyduty bearings , seals & gaskets , Cryogeniced internals

Accessories;
Custom from bumper , rockers , roofrack with corner vertical bars down to rockers ( act as roll bar ), full skirt bars with lip to act as bigger gaurds , lights , flip out tent on top , accessorys mounted on top, Autometer - EGT & Boost gauge on dash ,

Winch;
Toyota PTO winch , still not sure where to mount it ( thinkn possibly near the transfer case , so can run the cable either end - have to work it out )

Tires;
no Bigger than 33" high , possibly 13.5 wide or more if i can get it certed/engineered , will be 16" rims & 9-10" wide

Parts already have or soon to get :

Just got a good second hand transfer case with PTO & manual lock from a series 60 , picking up a 14B this coming weekend ( already have a 13BT rebuilder - will have to sell it or swap it for parts ) , already have a Good 2nd hand Garret GT25 VTN turbo with controller ( finding another will be hard ) , gettn 14BT connecting rods & injection pump soon , may have to find larger injection pump - not sure yet

(!!! Photos up soon !!! )

ANY ADVICE OR DIFFERENT OPINIONS WOULD BE GREAT , GO FOR IT ??????????????????

Sound great most the engine part .. so I have some notes.

If I remember wel those LJ comes with 4.56 or 4.88 on axles .. and with 15B-T or at least 14B-T sound you can move easy ( with no more than 8 PSI ) 37" taller tires with those R&P ..

You have the option to down R&P to 4.11 and 33" sound a great and pretty tough combo .. ( 8" can handle easy 35" )

I place the posible LSD in front and keep selectable locker in rear .. just for long travels ..

The engine weight just to note the huge diference ( in size and weight ) between 2L-T and 14B-T engines .. so keep in mind HD coils on front ( at least )

The engine room vs cooling system wil be test when you have it in place ..

just my .0002 cents for now ..

Tapage >>> cheers for the info , not sure what my diff ratio's are , this has been on the cards for a wee while , just been saving up & have just started buying parts in the last few weeks with more to come .

As for the LSD , have just kinda been thinkn a LSD ib the rear as could be towing a tralier - not sure . Would love a E-locker or the like , but have limited budget & be spent better elsewhere .

Great to get other peoples opinions before you hand your hard earned $$$ over

I think the noslip might be the locker thats been having quality control problems. You ought to check out aussie lockers, they are produced in Australia so i bet you could get one pretty cheap. Post some pics!

this truck has hilux running gear and a centered rear diff, correct? please be sure to post pics of how you mate the H55 and centered mini transfercase together.

i ask because i put a 3B in my canadian spec '85 4runner (identical chassis to same year hilux) using a custom bellhousing to the stock w56 tranny to keep my dual case setup, and now i want to turbo the motor, but i think that would probably kill my tranny.

i think its the older Lockrite you are talking about , have seen a few photos of the the lockrite's where the pins that hold them together "Bend "as there i a bit play between the 2 plate things ( what ever they are called ).

I have already asked about the Aussie locker thru the company in the US , they say they don't sell or even distribute them to Aussie , A bit of a Contradiction i reckn .

As far as i know or have been told , its has Landcruiser 8" diffs - tho i saw on another site they are called V6/turbo diifs , they are not beam axles , but planning on building a Custom Beam axle for the rear as they are tough .

Once i have this 14B sitting in the garage , hopefully this coming weekend , i'll take a few photos of the truck & some of the parts i have for it & put them up here , as soon as 14B is in garage it'll be torn down ready to be cleaned & crack tested ( Magnafluxed ) & sleeves will be coming out & gettn block tested for thickness to see if i can bore it out further for larger 15B sleeves .

also could be gettn a mid 80's series front end to use as parts , plan to rebuild the 4 spot vented calipers & run new slotted rotors , braided barke lines . Not sure how it will all bolt in to the front end , wonder if anyone has sawpped out a solid front disk brake set up for the Vented disk version ? Possibly use the spindles , hubs , etc that i take off the front an use them e rear beam axle thta i will build as a full floater .

Really lacking tools for this build as moved
from Aussie 5 months ago & had to sell my welders, trolley , jack/axle stands , compressor and everthing, so will be challenging to say the least , been buying some ne digital micrometer's for the engine build , etc have basic tools - all in fun eh !

picked up the 14B yesterday , sitting in the back of my SWB now , its not that much bigger that the 2LT really but heavier, similar length but it is a wee bit taller ( checked it with the tape measure ) like a few inchs from the skirt of the block to the top of rocker , higher . Photos up soon ,

I started pulling down the 14B last weekend & here are some photos finally , inside peak at a 14B that will turned into a 14BT as upgrading the parts to suit that will get form an importer ( turbo rods , turbo oil pump & cover , turbo injection pump , etc ). turns out the block is at max overbore now , been told it may be easier to just find another block ( Aussie & NZ 14B's are sleevless ) than bore & sleeve this one , so thinkn if i have to get another block , then why not go for a 15B as its like 400-500 cc bigger and all the 14BT internals will drop staight in anyway ( after machining & assembly ).

Going 13BT now as already have one & would need to get a heap of other parts to complete this 14B as a 14BT , have a 13BT so will save the hassle & money , already have a 14B - so planning on using that crank in the 13BT & push it out to around 3.7 ltr

Got an email back from a Engine parts supplier in the USA ( FlatlanderRacing.com ), after an inquirey - i will have to get some Custom Billet rods made to fit the 14B crank i have in my 13BT , to be able to run stock 13BT pistons , this way i don't have to get custom pistons everytime it needs a rebuild , prefer to use new rods to re-use rods that have already been reconditioned possibly a few times already , bit like using Brand new tyres , over re=treads .

Stock 13BT pistons don't look so bad , be fairly strong after Cryo treatment & HPC coatings to top & skirt .

last weekend stripped the 14B i have , mains & Journals are 1st size undersize & in mint condition , i compared the 13BT manual to the 14B manual that i have & looks like the 14B Crankshaft will drop straight in , the mains & journals are virtually identical except for number 3 mains , find out more when i get my 13BT .

Also have seen some - factory electric locker & disk brake rear ends out the later model Prado that are on Auction , be great to nab one & swap out my rear as its worn & be great with a selectable locker in the rear , already been priced for 400 bucks for a good 2nd hand LSD- complete 3rd member/nugget to suit my Hi-pinion front diff ( from a wrecker ).
