My Clutch is slipping in 4th and 5th gears under load and I need a new one. I'm only offroading occassionally up the beach etc(once a month), and I tow an offroad camper a bit over summer. I had the job priced. An original std Toyota Clutch is nearly half the part price of an aftermarket Heavy Duty one!....I'm wondering just how good the standard Toyota clutch is and if it is really worth the extra expense to go for an aftermarket Heavy duty one!?

I know its not the same engine, but I had the original toyota clutch behind my 13BT, it coped fine with lots off offroad work and 35''s and around 12psi boost. Now I have a 4 terrain with 21.5psi boost and just did a big offroad trip with heaps of sand/dune driving, coped no worries at all.

Im suprised the after market is twice the price of the OEM usually it's the other way around...you guys must have a heavy markup on your after market parts.

just to let you know .. I was running stock clutch for almost 10 years in Tencha recently replace it for another Toyota ones .. and I'm more than happy with it ..

Just reporting back. I went with the OEM std Toyota Clutch. I must say I'm very happy with it. Suprisingly it's very quiet, no bearing noise or sound difference when foot is on/off pedal and there is no clutch shudder on take off. It pulls up fantastically!!!

I went with a 4 terrain clutch from oz after I saw what happened to my oem clutch behind my 1hz turbo intercooled 15 pounds boost, the clutch couldn't take it - it was coming apart, cracked and delaminating. It would slip if I really tromped on it all locked up, low gear and in hard pull, just couldnt take the punishment. Your 1hdt has a bigger clutch and you are just towing so you will be ok.

I love the 4 terrain, and whoever said a heavy duty clutch wears your foot out that is not true, this is light and easy going - atleast in my case it isn't true.

Regards,

Louis

Hi Dieseler,
I have a BJ40 1976 with a 4 cyl B engine in it.
We change all the parts and did the engine like a new one. But when we put the new clutch, it is a space of 1 inch between the bearing and the plate inside the clutch. Can you help on that! you can reach me at 602 448 8107 Alan. Than you Dieseler

Will be putting a Valeo clutch kit behind my 3B here shortly. We wil see how that holds up. I got this clutch for $375
My original is still fine at 356,000km but the through out bearing is howling so I will do it all when im in there, including slave cylinder.

Some of it depends on how much torque you're putting down, but a lot of it depends on your driving style. If you are really rough on your clutch, even an aftermerket performance clutch will have a fairly short life, but on the other hand if you're gentle with your clutch, even an OEM Toyota clutch can go a long way with additional power mods.

Im interested in hearing how it goes, they are some of the cheapest around and they claim 10% extra clamp pressure then standard, there prices in oz are a bargain compared to others.

I will let you know how it goes for sure...but it will be a while before I find time to get it in :frown:

I did not want to start another thread about that ...

Regardless of the brand ... Bottom line... is an HD clutch worth the 200 - 250 extra dollar (+/-) ?

I had the Exedy sports clutch in my other 2 7* series and I was pretty happy with them. They seem to have better slip control over the standard clutch but they were a little heavy on my leg in slow traffic. In Australia they were cheaper or close to OEM in price.

Resume yes .. it worth it to me .. as other said before a little heavy on my knee but I'm ok with that ..

A Standard Toyota clutch, even brand new one, will not hold up to a G-Turbo. Better to put in a stronger one while the transmission is out, than having to pull it again (like me).

I am happy with my XXi clutch, it's not real heavy underfoot and can take 1000 nm
