I'm still planning on coming with my brother. 1 FJ40 2 people.

Also @tacosupreme do we have coordinates for campsite #3 yet?
No, I have been busy. I have driven 1800 miles in the last five days for work, and I have trucker vertigo, the feeling that you are driving when you're not. Ha. I did manage to find it once with only these directions:

"From I-84 near Meacham, take Forest Road 31 North (on the OBDR route) to Forest Road 3128, then Forest Road 3135 to spur road 030. Pond is on the left about 1/4 mile down the 030 road. It is not visible from the road."

I assume I could find it again, but it would be a good idea for someone to search Google Earth for Black Mountain Pond using the above directions and pull a grid as I've been turned around up there on more than one occasion. It's odd topography, lots of little fingers and ridges that have two tracks running down them that peter out to nothing or dead end on closed roads. I still don't have a GPS, one of you guys has to take charge of the navigation. Maybe more than one!

EDIT: one FJ80, two people and a chocolate lab.

EDIT AGAIN- I found it, it's at the head of Hellhole creek, someone figure out how to get a grid off of this- Google Maps

Perfect. Location is 45.579591, -118.245133 This looks like our highest campsite elevation wise yes?

I have some personal questions about the easiest way to get to the first two campsites driving main roads but I will PM you those.

Camp 1A, 13MAY16, arriving 0200 ZULU/7PM local (maybe later)
Latitude: 44° 3'15.55"N

Ya, but it's not crazy high. The way the weather has been I don't think it will be too arctic, but you never know.

Ok, got it.

Roger that. This weekend and following week are looking like spring/summer is arriving. Stuff should start melting quickly.

just me on this trip and I am staying until a day that ends in Y.... or something breaks. (*mauling, zombie egress and detainment not included)
stoked but time and projects are colliding :wrench::doh:

Shock Update,

Went ahead and put on the Bilsteins last night and took them out for a comparison run over some RR tracks; the results are as follows:

Subjectively, 40 mph didn't feel any different. 50 mph felt a little softer, as you can see in the slightly lower peak acceleration. Will see how it feels when subjected to more frequent bumpage in a few weeks.

Can one of you smart guys with a GPS figure out our mileage between fill ups? Prineville-Seneca, Seneca-Unity, Unity-Meacham, Meacham-Walla Walla. I tried using Google earth and the measure tool but that's just a rough guess. I don't think we'll go over 150 miles on any leg between fuel, but just want to double check. Offroad I get around 8.5mpg with a 3FE with 4.88's and 35's, with a 25 gallon tank that means a range of 212 miles of dirt or so, much less if we're pushing snow...

Prineville-Seneca = 155 Miles
Seneca-Unity = 95.4 Miles
Unity-Meacham = 193 Miles
Meacham-Walla Walla = 102 Miles

This is based off of the GPS tracks you sent to me. The Unity-Meacham is by far the longest stretch miles wise. I plan on carrying 5 extra gallons of fuel, but I am not going to have my Jerry can holder on the truck yet by the time we go so it will have to be inside which sucks!

Also. I see that campsite #1 is not on the OBDR tracks that you sent. Is the plan to go out to Seneca, then down hwy 395 and back in to the camp spot on NF 37? Or are we gonna cut down earlier on NF and come in to the camp spot from the west?

I got all the campsites and those tracks you sent me plugged into my GPS so I dont think we will get too lost :)

On another note, I got out this weekend and did some camping with the family. I LOVE the RTT. There are a couple things we need to work out but it was awesome overall. The cruiser is too tall and the annex doesnt touch the ground so we are going to have to extend it somehow. Also in the morning we went to fold the tent back up and there was a lot of moister under the mattress (no one peed the bed). Do any of you that have RTT's experience this? It was enough that the mattress was wet on the bottom. It was a clear night in central oregon (so very dry). I am just wondering if it has to do with the tent heater + warm bodies inside and the cooler night (34 degrees outside) creating that much condensation?

Oh and that long stretch of 193 miles between fuel does not take into account the small detour to the camp spot. So add probably another 20 miles onto that number. It may be that we will need to find fuel somewhere in-between Unity and Meacham to break it up a little?

We'll go straight to the gas station in Seneca, then to camp 1 on back roads unless it is so late that it's closed, in which case we'll get gas in the A.M.

There are several options to divert for fuel along the way, Ukiah isn't horribly off course but remember to bring cash and be polite. The owner is choosy who they sell fuel to, it is not a sure bet. We'll figure it out. I think I get the worst mileage of anyone (3FE motor+35's=10mpg on a good day) so as long as I'm still moving you guys will be fine.

I'm thinking about welding up a fuel can holder for the rear bumper so I don't have to put it in the cab or on the roof... but I just got done adjusting the valves, did plugs, cap, rotor, wires and I'm tired.

I notice in my travel trailer using a catalytic heater there is more condensation than usual. Also I solved your spare room being too short problem, just let the air out of the tires.

Do you have the anti-condensation mat? If not that cuts condensation down a bit.

I've been saving the desiccant packs out of bags of jerky for him. Those should do the trick.

I looked at the route from Unity-Meacham... we go right through Sumpter so we'll be topped off right before we get to camp 2 (it's around 30-40 miles from Sumpter). I don't know if you guys watch TV (I don't have cable) but the Hoffman's from Goldrush are mining in the area and there is a Discovery Channel film crew with them. Maybe we'll bump in to them, who knows.

Looks like Sumpter will be about a 10 mile detour but worth it to get the fuel that day.

I am going to go by CVT and grab one I think. I dont want it to be wet all the time and then the mold starts!

Either way, I'm prepared. Just got my fuel can holster fried together. I can still open the top hatch, but have to remove the can holder to drop the tailgate.

Made from an old bed frame, parts of a snowmobile trailer, and some scrap metal. It's a little wobbly at the hitch, need to come up with some kind of shim so it doesn't rattle. Duct tape?

Sorry I've been MIA. Haven't been getting alerts from this site anymore for whatever reason... I am still planning on going. I'll be flying solo. I cannot imagine a circumstance where I wouldn't. The only unknown is whether I will be leaving Sunday or Monday.

I tried to go do a hike with my wife on Sunday but there was a truck blocking the road about 2 miles from the trailhead. I am confident I could have gotten around him, but with 2' of crappy snow on the ground I didn't want to risk it. Instead, I put it in 2wd and buried myself a few times to get familar with my new recovery boards. I knew they were cool, but I didn't realize just how well they worked. My wife was very impressed which is important since she skeptically purchased them for me. Once I was comfortable with my 2wd stuck situations I buried all corners to the axles. No issues at all, and I didn't even air down. (of course I made sure to do this in an area where I could winch myself out, or just air down and engage the locker. That would have been a show to get stranded out there lol...)

Unity-Meacham = 193 Miles

193 miles off road is going to be a hell of a push for me. I'll also have 5 gallons of fuel with me, so I should be fine. If you carry my water, I'll carry your fuel for you (assuming it's a NATO style can...?).

Bobby at CVT should have an annex extension for you. It's just a section of fabric that zips between the annex and the floor. I forget exactly how tall they are.

The condensation mat will deal with a good percentage of your moisture build up, but another thing you can (should) do is crack the windows a bit to let the air move through. In my experience the little vents at the top simply are not enough. Our first night in Whistler this past February I forgot to crack the windows and woke up to water dripping off of the overhead bars.

If I stay out of boost I should be able to turn 13-15mpg or so, but my tank is just a little guy at around 17 usable gallons. That SHOULD be enough, but it's nearing my "too close for comfort" range. With 5 extra gallons I shouldn't have an issue.

That's awesome! I used to watch that show every Friday night and really enjoyed it. I think I watched the first two seasons until the pattern of we're going to find something! We didn't find anything! We found something! It's nowhere near enough though! got old...

Yeah I agree getting fuel in Sumpter will be a good thing. I really dont know how many miles I get with a full tank anymore. I switched to 5.29s and my fuel economy seems to be way way better. But my odometer is also lying to me a little bit just like my speedometer.

My son and I have watched that Gold Rush show quite a bit and he is stoked I told him we are going through the area of their new claim. He is getting really into rocks and minerals lately which I know nothing about.
