Heavily considering purchasing a friend's stock, $20k 100k 09 GX470. Planning to lightly offroad it in order to get to hiking trailheads, camp around Utah/national parks, and tow my dualsport.

I'd like to upgrade the stereo, but after some research it looks like it's complicated. Basically, upgrading the stereo itself is a massive pain requiring multiple adapters. That's fine with me. But the factory stereo can't power more than 2ohm speakers, so I'd need an amp to power aftermarket speakers. I'd like to throw in a sub as well, and apparently this also requires an audio processor, second amplifier, etc.

I'm told this has something to do with the GX470's digital stereo/something with the audio, whereas a normal stereo has an analog sound or something. Guy was quoting me around $3k depending for the whole install. I'd need a pro to do this as I don't have time to learn how to install a sound processer and all, although I have installed speakers/stereos in other cars with no issue.

Has anyone on this sub upgraded the speakers and encountered the same? I'm not finding a lot of information available on this topic for the GX470 specifically.

If you have the mark levinson audio then yeah all of that is true. Head unit sends audio to an amp which then powers the 10 speakers in the car. No way around doing any of what you've been told. Thats the right method and not cheap. The newer the vehicle the more likely a scenario like this is the case as everything gets integrated into screens.
