I have done some searching and everyone has different plans and crutchfield says 6.5"

What fits under the stock grills front and rear. And are there any links to threads that I might have missed.

Thanks,
Jonathan

I put the lx450 pioneer's upfront. Prefect fit and sounds good on a clean signal from an aftermarket amp. In the back doors I put some Infinity Kappa 4" component woofers in. They were very easy to install into the original plastic basket. Acutally I used strong silicon glue to mount them in the basket.

I put the front speakers on a set of Kappa crossovers and put the tweeters in the dash. The rear tweeters went up in the rear roof, of course the imaging in the rear is off but only an audio freak would notice or care about.

I went the pioneer route.

6.5's in front...4's in the rear.

Sounds great.

I have 6.5" Infinity Kappa 2-ways up front and 6.5" Infinity Reference 2-ways in the rear doors. No seperate tweeters. The 6.5" rear speakers do use a very thin spacer (1/8"?) to keep them out of the window mechanism. I removed the DS spacer and it just barely hits when you lower the window. Not a big deal. They have the Infinity grills, so not really a factory look, but in the grey interior, I don't think it's as big of a deal. The black/grey grills look a little out of place on the oak interior, but I like the look of the Infinity grills on my truck

People make a big thing out of speaker depth and size issues, but if you don't mind aftermarket speaker grills, you have a lot of really good choices.

AHHHHHH, what a PITA...:shotts:

I wanted to go with Sony Explode 6.5" 4-ways up front and Pioneer 4" 2 ways in the rear...I can find the Pioneers no problem...but it appears that the XS-R1641 has been discontinued!!! Does anyone have advise on the new model number that will fit in a '92?

yeah I want stock speaker grills. I'll figure something out, as no one has used speakers I am really interested in.

Thanks for all the links and info guys.

I used Xplods--the replacements for those. They worked but took a while. and required some tweaks.

Did you ever do the complete right up on these or is your link above the extent of the details?

The pioneer rears are fine by me...as they are direct fit...but I want to install 4 ways up front so I dont have to worry about tweeters too. Do the Sony's up front fit easily and are they 4 way?

I never completed the writeup but I do have some more pics. By the time I was done with all four, I was kinda just glad to be done.

But, to answer your question, the front 6.5s have woofers and tweeters (2 way?) in them. Would a 4-way speaker include woofer/mid/mid/tweeter? I'm kinda confused on that point.

I didn't have to cut the metal door panel to make them fit but I did have to drill new holes to anchor the speakers into the door frame. I anchored the speakers independently of the trim panel and then mounted the grills to the trim panel. I did have to make the speaker holes in the trim panel larger. I did it this way so I could pull the trim panel without disturbing the speakers.

The whole setup does sound worlds better. My factory speakers were missing half the foam baffles.

Hope this helps.

If you need more info, let me know!

If you want to keep the stock front grills and keep is simple, buy the LX450 speakers. They will cost around $110 for the pair but they are best drop in solution. The connectors on the speakers are different but it's easy to pop the pins out and use the Toyota connector. The part numbers are good for Toyota parts so C-Dan can get them or your local dealer. p# 86160-60160

My rig is setup like this upfront. I have an aftermarked Kenwood cd/mp3 50 watt/4 player.

It has MTX TX-4001 Component series speakers in the front doors. The tweeter is behind the factory door speaker hole. The 4" driver is where the factory dash speakers are. So everything is hidden and factory looking. The sound is VERY cleean/clear up front.

The rear doors have MTX TDX-4002 speakers. They are just mounted on the door panels and use the MTX grill.

The system sounds very clean, it basically at this point just needs a sub to fatten it up. At that point is will sound very nice!

What speakers are you interested in, I think that someone, maybe Cary, used MB Quarts and others have used Alpine or Eclipse, do you like the sound of those ones?
