Thanks to Colorado80 for setting me up with some great speakers. I was leaning towards the Pioneers via the other thread. The Pioneers have a fitment problem in the 97 and the change for the upgraded Lexus stereo was not suppose to be that much. I found out why, there were Pioneer speakers installed from the factory of very good quality.

The infinities with the stock head unit sound awesome. Clearer and crisper sound all around.

I installed the 6022si speakers in the front. We had to modify the intsall slightly and after removing the existing speaker, install the new speaker from the topside of the door panel. We used Drywall screws to tap and drill new screw holes and then used the infinity speaker cover with no issue. It looked like it would be a tight fit, but the door closed fine.

Make sure you tape up all the exposed contacts on the back of the speaker before you put it in.

The rear speakers were more of a pain. We removed the old speaker and cut out the bottom of the black plastic mounting bracket and reused it.

We had to grind a little of the inside plastic to fit.

We also had to grind the metal door about an 1/8" to fit.

The speaker was to tall for the stock cover to fit, but if you cut the crossmember across the cover, they will fit just fine.

Be careful not to drill holes were the speaker clips into the mounting bracket

More of the rear speaker install.

Note the first picture shows we drilled a screw in were the speaker cover clip goes (12 oclock), we ended up having to move it slightly.

I don't have a picture of the finished rear, but it uses the stock grill and looks like it did before we started.

WOW, Romer is quick. I just got home and had dinner after the install and he has already posted the install thread. It was a pleasure to work on Romer's amazing truck. I would just like to say pictures don't do Romer's truck justice. It looks 10x better in person. Goodluck and enjoy your new tunes.

You left out an important detail..............................

How much did da infiniti shizzle set you back?

Dang, all these speaker install threads are going to force me to finally wrap up my Sony Xplod install and post it up.

Nice job!

Using his employeee discount they were $110 all together. he doesn't work there anymore (just quit) so not sure if he can do that again.

I think they would normally be about $160- $170

Ken,

Can you keep the stock speaker grilles?

I cut one up trying some things before figuring out the install. I'll save you the one thats good.

Romer, just to clarify--the speaker is actually attached to the outside of the door panel, not to the metal door frame, right? If so, did you do any thing to try to seal the gap between the speaker hole in the door frame and the speaker?

So it that a yes? I can continue to use my stock speaker grilles? If so, I would go with the Infiniti's

The way I installed it does not allow for use of the stock cover. Come on over and listen to it and then you can sit in Sarah's 450. According to another member who e-mailed me the new Pioneers are close to the Pioneers in sound quality that come with the Lexus sound system.

I did not see a gap between the speaker hole in the door frame. There is exposed metal frame were the speaker touches even though we installed it on the outside of the panel. At least thats what I recall and I am sticking to it.

Since it sounds perfect to me, I don't plan on taking it off to see or do anything different if there is a gap.

I mounted my Sony Xplods the same way--to the outside of the door panel and used the Sony grills. The factory speakers were mounted to the door frame and had a foam weatherstrip around them that sealed any gap between the exterior and interior. By mounting the new speakers to the door panel, the stock speaker hole was left open and I wondered about moisture, etc., getting in to the interior door panel. I was thinking of going back in and modifying the install so I can reseal that gap. Maybe I'm being too OCD about this one.

You're right, new speakers sound great, compared to no diaphragm:

Not sure how the stock speaker hole could possibly be left open. the speaker is securely mounted in the existing hole with screws into the metal pulling the speaker tight against the door. This would keep the panel tight between the speaker and door panel and effectively make a seal.

I understand how you did it now. Makes sense. I mounted my Sony speakers only to the door panel and then installed the door panel to the door. That's the difference. I'll still pull mine apart and modify it make sure there's no open gap. Thanks!

Nice job fellas!

I guess I'll have to get my 4022i's off the shelf and installed in the rear doors now.

I was wondering about re-using the stock bracket on the rears w/ the 4022's. I saw, not only the magnet diameter vs. the stock hole diameter problem, but the mounting depth to the window guide seemed sketchy. So you're saying the stock bracket provides enough clearance with the 4022i's?

Polak I would recommend using the stock bracket for the rears because there is no way you are going to make that fit with the window track right behind out. You have to cut out the bracketing behind the stock bracket just keep the round part of it. Look at Romer's pics and you can see it. Also the retail cost was $99.99 for the shallow mount front's and 89.99 for the rears. It's almost a 50% disc. I ordered some more for Rising Sun members which should be arriving next week. If anyone on mud wants them let me know (PM/Email) because they end up costing me approximately $118 so I will sell them for $120 and shipping which shouldn't be more than $10 I am assuming.

Romer, stupid question, but what do you mean by taping up exposed contacts on back of speaker? Do you mean when you attach the wires to the speaker, to seal those up really well? I know that water literally will drip down between the window and the weather stripping on the window into the door panel and onto the speaker. So weather proofing them i think is a must.
