Speaker grilles look like CRAP.

What the hell were the designers/engineers thinking with this one? Hmmm... Shoes bump them constantly - dirty shoes at that... Hmmm. OH! Got it! A thin soft cloth! Perfect.

Seriously though. My 100 is an '06 with under 60,000 miles on it. The speaker griles (covers) look like they're out of a 30-year-old work truck.

Anyone recover these? Got any good cleaning ideas?

Thanks.

All four look like this:

I believe Bamachem did a write up on this

I got mine to look very good by spraying them down with Tuff Stuff, and then dabbing them with a towel. Try it two or three times and you might not have to replace them.

I took mine off and cleaned them. Undo the 4 screws at the bottom of the door panel and take out the pop clips on the side. Once you get those out you should have room to fit a 90 degree ratcheting phillips head or possibly a stubby phillips head back there and take out the 4 small screws that hold the cover on.

If the glue is still in good shape and there is no major cuts in the fabric you can clean them. I sprayed mine with resolve, let it sit for 5 min, then mixed hot water with a small amount of detergent in a tub, let them soak for about 15 min. The water will be nasty. Its hard to imagine how much dirt is in those things.

Take them out of the water and then you can actually wash them. I used a childs soft toothbrush on the really dirty stains and just my hand on the rest of it. Make sure you don't use anything abrasive on them, even like a wash cloth. The fabric will fray and look like a 30 year old sweater that went through the wash too many times.

Let them dry and enjoy. Mine was a night and day difference.

I recovered all mine with black speaker grill cloth I picked up at a stereo shop. Just use some spray adhesive around the edges and back. Been 5 years and 5 Wisconsin winters and still looks good.

This thread needs more before and after pictures !

After pic. Was recovered 5 years ago and still looks great. I did some custom work to tweak the speaker angle so you'll notice my grill shape has been modified a little as well.

nice job! Did you replace the speaker too?

Thanks! Yes, I installed MTX Pro series (can't remember the exact model) 6.5" ( in a custom made mount angled more toward my head) and a tweeter mounted in a custom pod just above my foot. Sounds pretty amazing still. Lots of work though...

at the risk of highjacking this thread.:o

I was asking because the sound in my 100 is okay except for one speaker. I think one of the right rear door speakers is toast. I might turn replacing the speaker into a little project and recover all the grills. Do you know by any chance what size speakers are in the rear doors?

Pretty sure they are 6.5" like the front. Maybe you should upgrade the front ones and move one of the oem fronts to the back? Just a thought...

That's a good idea! I will do that when I get some new speakers.

Isn't there a plastic grill behind the cloth? Just rake the cloth off. It'll stay cleaner.

I used Superclean and turtle wax brand carpet cleaner on mine. Worked well.

Shane, Aatlasxx, replaced the cloth on his with hounds tooth. Check out his 100 build thread for the details.

I think new grills are about $30 each.

Shane, thanks for the link. I need to replace all of mine as well but wanted something more substantial than OEM.

I'm ordering these since I'm replacing all my speakers with something a bit nicer than what these trucks came with. This is good timing.

The one shown will work on all four doors?

If only these came in tan/brown . . .:o

When I recently dynamatted (exterior panels) and BAM'd (interior panels) my front doors I removed the plastic grills / clothes and placed them in a solution of hot water and Dawn dish washing soap.

A few mild scrubs later and they look a lot better.

When I do the rear doors in the spring, I'll probably replace all four grills with new speaker cloth.

Very easy mod.

Other than Shane, anyone have a decent online source for the cloth?

That $42 is for a set that will do all 4 speakers. Much better than $30 for one new OEM speaker grill.
