I think the rear seat was a bench and a single. The bench folded forward and the single seat folded to the side.
Unfrtunately it was rotten from a bad resto.
It was engineless and I think the owner was contemplating a sbc swap but give up because of the rust.
It also had the sought after dashpad. Int was intact and in good cond.
I had an option on a good 3B at the time and considered fitting it into this.

These were not rare here but most of them have had the guts ripped out them by now

And what makes the inside of a diesel exhaust go white,overheated perhaps??

In the late 70's and early 80's , BJ40's were shipped to Costa Rica partially unassembled. Once there, the bodies were bolted together.
They did this because duty taxes were much less if imported this way.
New enclosed "luxury" vehicles at the time had 200% to 300% duty tax.
80% of the vehicles sold in Costa Rica for a few years there were Land Cruisers because they were cheap. Still pricey at $20K, but half the price of anything else.
All were basic. Drum brakes B engine, no heat or defrost, no rollbar.

I went to the dealer there in 1981 looking at them. They did sell the updated BJ40's with the 3B engine, disc brakes etc. But they were imported as a complete vehicle, so they cost alot more at almost $60,000. That one sat on the showroom floor for a year. Needless to say they didn't sell many/any.
 
FWIW the Bandeirante was only available in Brazil. This was the name given to the Cruisers made at the factory in Brazil. They had the liscensing and tooling to make them from toyota. They made them up until a few years ago. Lots of different body styles that Toyota Japan never made. They also came with 5 cylinder Mercedes diesel motors. They basically used what they had.

Also, listen to Cruiserguy. I have spent quite a bit of time in Central America and they use their Cruisers HARD. They beat the ever living crap out of them. They may look pretty due to cheap body work available down there. What you don't see is: Lots of Bondo and bent or broken frames.

A friend of mine has a 1976 HJ45 pickup that looked really nice when it came into the US. After a winter of being here in Colorado, the body looks like s***. Large pieces of bondo literally fell off of the truck.

Also, Central American Cruisers came as CKD's (completetly knocked down). They generally do not have heaters, AC, disc brakes, etc. I am speaking of the older 40 series. Now for the 70 series, they have the s***! 6 cylinder turbo diesel, full float rears, AC, PS, etc. Although, I don't recall ever seeing any with power windows or door locks. I want one bad!
 
I would think the inside of the exhast would be white from burning coolent.

Sorry to highjack the post, but any idea on how much a CDN spec BJ70 was worth in 1986? I'm just curious

Wayne, I thought the Canadian-spec BJ40s had the H42 tranny and 3.7 ratio diff gears? Then, the '83 & '84 BJ42 had the H55F tranny and 4.1 ratio diffs?

this is a common misconception. the diesel 40/42 had the 4.11 gear sets int eh rear. the gassers went to 3.7 in 77...
the tranny is right though all the 4 speeds that came into canada (that i have SEEN) have been H42. the 5 speeds are the H55F. i have heard rumours of the H41 slipping in but i have yet to see one...
the Japanese spec 40/42/43/44/46 all seem to be the H41 or the H55F.
all the FJ45s in canada are 4.11 gear sets with the H42 tranny...
