A month or so ago I changed the belts on my 96 FJ80. I Took it to the car wash, cleaned it up real good. Came home changed the valve cover gasket, belts, PHH, cap, rotor...... Started it up and I have a whine/whistle like a supercharger winding up not like a squeeling belt though. I thighened the belts, no change. So I loosened the belts no change. Thought I would give it a little time to break in, still no change. Sprayed some belt crap on it while it was running that made no difference. The noise speeds up with RPMs. Not affected by A/C on or off. No difference while turning the wheel.

The old belts were starting to slip and squeel. The replacements are Goodyear. Any ideas other than telling me I should have got the belts from Toyota.

Unfortunately, no .. I had the exact same thing when the PO put aftermarket (grooved) belts on my rig. As soon as I replaced them with the OEM belts, the noise was gone. It seriously sounded like I had a supercharger!

Are your Goodyear belts smooth or grooved on the contact side?

Yup... OEM belts. Butter smoooooth==no noise. I did have a tensioner pulley (a/c) go bad and got the exact same sound.

I have some old gooved ones on my 40 and i get that supercharger sound as well. Although its hard to hear over the Singer Sewing Machine valve train.

Could it be that you might have loosened a ground wire somewhere? That might cause that sc noise also.

Salue

I just had my belts replaced as well and I brought it back to the garage and had him tighten them up because of the noise, which made no difference.

Mine sounds almost like a turbo diesel :) I don't think the belts are OEM and I don't think I want to go through the hassle of replacing new belts with OEM ones...

They are grooved. Yours were too?

That's the problem bro .. they need to be smooth. Those notches are what causes the whining. It could also be a pulley bearing, but my guess is that you need to either buy OEM belts or find aftermarket belts that are not grooved

Aftermarket cogged or ribbed belts will make a lot of noise. I would not buy anything but OEM for the fan belts, they come in a matched set.

make a easy test .. remove the idler pulley and see if the sound goes .. there is the point of your grooved belts make the sound ..

Note: I'm not recomending drive the car without the idler pulley .. just for a Test .. In my case it make no diference ( I'm running grooved belts ) but I'm pretty sure if in Aarakawa they put the idler pulley there, there is a good reason to keep there ..

Thanks Ben .. I kept searching for the correct word. Cogged or ribbed!!

X whatever on the OEM belts. I had the same noise until I replace mine.

Don't you wish you had read this BEFORE you paid to replace your belts? I know I do.

The good news is...its no big deal. Either live with the sound or replace the belts. No major expense either way.

Some people mistakenly route the belts around the idler pulley. If that is done with a cogged belt, it will really make noise.

I got 1500 off my 80 because of that noise, its the cogged non OEM belts, first time I called C-Dan, he called it over the phone..........

IIRC isn't posible .. isn't it .. ?

Called the dealer today, they said their belts were also ribbed, groved. I picked up some El Cheapo belts they were the only one I could find that were smooth on the contact side. It will be worth the $3.99ea to see if it fixes the problem. If fixed I will search for better belts. Thanks for the responses guys, will let everyone know the outcome.

My truck whistles and always has. I have changed the belts and alternator idler pulley and it whistles. I have performed the landtank MAF mod and it still whistles. It sounds to me like the sound is coming from the front passenger side (air intake). You're not just hearing this all over again now that your belts aren't squealing anymore, are you?

I've heard others around here mention the whistle under moderate to full throttle, so I think it is something common. I know this is not exactly what you described, but I just want to rule it out.

The ribbed belts are probably it! Call cruiserdan, a full 3 belt set is only like $20.

Cheap smooth belts stopped the noise. Now to order a set from Toyota. Thanks guys!
