Sounds like supercharger after belt change

I just put some Gates belts on mine. Cogged as well. I also get the "supercharger whine". Sounds like a mild mannered very slow big ugly 03 Cobra. LOL. Oh well. They are good belts regardless of the noise. I will just pull up to people with their windows down and look at them menacingly while reving my supercharged cruiser.

D

Cheap smooth belts stopped the noise. Now to order a set from Toyota. Thanks guys!

Sounds like you either have time to burn or money to burn...why didn't you just listen to all the above and get the yota belts when everyone suggested? not much more money

Called the dealer today, they said their belts were also ribbed, groved. I picked up some El Cheapo belts they were the only one I could find that were smooth on the contact side. It will be worth the $3.99ea to see if it fixes the problem. If fixed I will search for better belts. Thanks for the responses guys, will let everyone know the outcome.

Try a different dealer or give cruiserdan a call. It sounds like your dealer was trying to sell you generic replacement belts instead of the real matched set. I learned my lesson on this a while back.

IIRC, the 'right' belts come in a matched set tied together under a single part number. From what I could tell they were cut from the bandberry off the same core - side by side.

Glad to see you found a solution. I had the same noise on a Honda I had but it was caused by the Unorthodox Racing aluminum underdrive pulleys :p

Thanks gang!

Hi Guys:

I used to have a 383 stroker powered fj40 then got a dual t-case built 4.3 4runner. This site has been a wealth of knowledge.

I was about to throw some cheap belts on the 1996 FJ80. I actually made the point to tell the dude at Pep Boys when he offered me the 1 year warranty belts or 3 year warranty.......that "belts are belts!"

The ones I have are ribbed and I will go buy the OEM belts tomorrow.

Thanks IH8!

Rick
