:D May I curse you? 2 items I have been shouting for and I finally gave up in frustration....and purchased an AC unit. Now that I am broke you show up...phssssst on you.

What market is the steering column from? Some markets got the single piece until the end of production. US market got the two piece starting 8/80. Single piece shaft before that. That hump appears to be from 83/84 with a four speed. Five speed the transfer hole is further back. Posted pictures of the humps in the current crossmember thread in the 40/55 tech section. I have both four and five speed humps for the 83+. The numbers stamped in the L brackets will tell which model 40 series they are for. Center crossmember we're the same on all 83+ only the L brackets were different. Years ago thought there was only one style for the 40 series and was happy I found one on eBay. That turned out to have L brackets for the FJ45 and crossmember was the early style before the five speeds, 83+. Years later collected a few more and know what they all came out of. What you plan to use them in will tell you which parts are needed. The hump just requires the hole being a little further back and can provide a measurement of how much. But these only work with the correct transfer case shift lever.

The column I have is from an 83 , it is a two piece. I have two late model covers from 4 speeds and they do not have the added raised section.

It seems some markets did get flat covers in late models but some did get raised inspection covers with a four speed. Upper left is 80 or 82 FJ40 US market. Upper right is from 83 BJ42 with a five speed from Australian market. Lower right is from a 84 HJ47RV with a H41 four speed From Australian market. Other is just a 87 FJ60 US market. Can see the difference in transfer case shift lever between the 83 five speed and 84 four speed, but both are raised. Raised section started 10/82 when the 83 model and five speed as a option in short and mid wheel base models. What markets got what I'm not sure as these are the only two 83+ plus inspections covers I've seen in person.

I purchased a cover like the black one in the lower right of your photo after being told it would fit the H55F. :bang: How much will I have to move the opening to accommodate a new H55F with a 40 top cover?

Just did a quick measurement. From the front edge the opening starts at 50M/1 15/16" on the four speed cover. 80MM/3 1/4" on the five speed cover. So 30MM/1 5/16" further back. Good thing is they share the same inner and outer boot so opening is correct.

Still find it interesting that so many four speed raised inspection covers are showing up with claims that all four speeds were flat. When I look up different models they all show a new part number starting 10/82. But I'm not convinced that Toyota didn't change number on parts that stayed same but were used as part of a five so new number was issued. This is just my opinion. Given up on trying to make sense of. While it will be work to relocate the opening for the transfer case not as hard as dealing with the different footprints for the pre and post 10/82 inspection cover so having a post 10/82 inspection cover from a four speed is better than starting with the earlier flat ones. I'm just glad I have 79 rather than a earlier year. Shape of the 79+ tunnel is easier to deal with the longer five speed.

Have you questioned the position, shape, or length of the shift lever. Since I have a 40 series top cover for the H55F it will be further forward than the version for the 60 series. I wonder how that will affect the transmission cover I have...if at all?

The shifting point for the 40/60/70 series H55F are all the same. The four speed the piece is almost straight because the boss on the four speed case used them is further forward. Believe it was 4/85 when Toyota added the spacer to the four speed in the US market FJ60 and the boss moved further back on reverse part of the housing. What Toyota did with the few LWB 40 series after 4/85 not sure and isn't a concern here. What moving the boss further back is change everything. If you use the lever from the early four speed it will be way to far back and height will be wrong. 60 series will also be too far back but not as bad if from five speed or four speed with the spacer. Only the 40 series five speed has the correct location. Believe it was @rick_d who said certain ones from the 70 series were closer than the 60 series. Did you get the shifters for both the transmission and transfer case when you got yours?
