Solid 19.5 mpg. Am I doing something wrong? (1 Viewer)

Vacuum gauge

As far as the vac gauge, it shows essentially among other things engine load. As I drive I keep an eye on the engine load and I am mindful of what "tasks" are engine load expensive. Like passing uphill etc.

I have a 97 LX with 167K and VERY consistently get 16.5mpg. I have a daily commute of 30 miles...18 or so highway the rest city. The worst I have calculated since purchasing the beauty in april was 14.9mpg...and that was with 50+ miles on rough 4x4 roads....but coming back down into Denver I was pretty much coasting :)
I also read all this about 12mpg and wonder what I am doing wrong. When I filled up yesterday....18.85 gallons....311 miles on the trip = 16.50mpg. She is all stock! I even have an exaust leak that needs fixed.

man and i thought my 17.2 was good.

Maybe there is a substantial difference between the two motors?

There is a big difference between the 3FE and the 1FZ, for sure. I would bet that the driving style is the biggest difference here.

I wonder if you would get even better mpg if you disabled the egr? When I did mine it yielded maybe 1-2mpg and seems to run much better.

DO NOT OPEN THE HOOD!

DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING!

The truck is blessed.

Is there a way to mess with the egr that can be unwound easily for smog?

See post #27

Most We have gotten is 17.5 consistantly.Ill tweek it a little more. MIke

I agree with cruiserdan!! I don't even want to fix my exaust leak...or do the front axle service because I don't want to mess with the perfection! :D And I don't really drive like grampa either.....I will try babying it and see what I get.......

I do get 20 mpg with 275´s completely stock driving at 50 mph, try to drive at 60 mph and I drop down to 17 mpg at sea level and straight road.

Driving around town I get 11 mpg.

When I first bought my 80 it had 109k on the clock, completely stock. I daily drove it 2 years for work. I travel 95% of the time and mostly highway commutes. I was averaging 17.5 - 18.5 mpg until a P0401 code popped up and it dropped slightly.

I bet if I had removed the running boards, third row seats and drove slower than 75mph then 19ish mpg wouldn't have been out of the question.

I used the following calculation every tank for over two years -
zero out the trip odometer, drive until almost empty, when I filled up I took the miles on the trip odo and divided by the gallons used to fill up. Logged the results on each receipt

Still got the receipts in an envelope but I want ever see that type of mileage again with 315s and armor so I don't even care to know how bad it is now :crybaby:.

Dislexia? Flipped the 6 for a 9?

Is this for real? The gas mileage and the tire psi?

My JDM 80 with a diesel didn't get that when I had it . . . well maybe would have if I would stay at 55MPH on the hwy (with lift and tires only).

I believe you NerdNoise, I don't even think it is that far out of the ordinary. I mean, heck, I get 21-2 if I am careful, so yah, 19.5 should be fine

 in my dreams

Mr. Shaman:
what would it take for you to bestow your blessing on my truck too?
TIA

:D

As Dan said, it is blessed for a gaser, as for all you JDM 1HD-T owners out there whats up? My unit, although it is stock except for the 3" exhaust just netted me 25.5MPG average on a round trip i made last weekend from Langley to smithers BC. And for those who know the first half of the trip is not the easiest. However in town i average arround 15-19 (lower mainland traffic= step on it )
