I'm doing the front knuckles on my 70, I remember on the 40 I replaced the annoying little hard line to soft line to hard line setup with one longer hardline.

Does someone know the part number or what it was from? I think maybe from a Suzuki samarai or something?

70 one vs the 40's replacement

You mean longer soft line?

Yes it's a longer softline that I connected directly to the caliper from the axle, removing both the short soft line and the short hard line on the brake shield.

This allows me to take the caliper off to do brakes etc without draining the fluid and bleeding...

That flex line looks a lot like a stock Toyota line that goes from the frame to axle. When I bought new lines I checked on Rock auto for lengths.

On the older dust shields that little transition connection (from hard to soft line) was bolted on. Which allows removing without draining etc.

At some point they started riveting it on.

Can't help with the p/n but I ground off the rivet and welded in a stud to make mine removable for the same reasons.

Yep mine are riveted and annoying... Thinking it's nicer to just get a longer line and go that route... Any reason not to and instead weld a stud?

I think I'd already bought the short flex lines, and had forgotten about the rivet when I got in there.

I guess in theory the less soft line in the system the better, but I'm not sure those couple inches would be noticeable. (That's what she said)

Those NAPA part numbers from post #17 are worth noting. Thanks for digging that old thread up!

These ones are good for frame to axle. About 22" long which is a fair bit more than stock.
Still need to install one on the rear of the 40.

part numbers in this thread.

I cross referenced that original NAPA part to a Dorman H77376. Found it on Amazon. Said they had two, but seems delayed in netherworld of Amazon. Got the whole front end off. Specs are vague so once they arrive I’ll see exactly how long they are but I’m hoping not 20”.

I ended up finding different ones that I hope will work, haven't tested them yet... The house project has dragged me back away from the cruiser which is annoying when it's all taken apart...

I feel you on that, I'm back to another 5 weeks away for work. Not sure I'll get it put back together before I go.
Amazon said the lines were in stock, but after 3 days ( 1 day after promised delivery ) still haven't shipped.
I did double check line length with the Dorman site, and these H77376 are 12.2" long so should be a perfect fit
once they do arrive. I considered going back looking for SS braided lines but being cheap for now. Maybe later
if these get cracked.

Did that Dorman hose work ok?

Just pulled my calipers off to go get my core charge back and new rotors. Broke a hard line so it's a good time for me to do this .

Just use vice grips pinch off the soft line so you don’t lose fluid while you do brake work

I know this will fall on deaf ears here.. Bleeding brakes should be part of regular maintenance.

Dot3 absorbs moisture from the atmosphere which ends up in the highest concentrations at the lowest point. If you bleed your four brakes once a year, just a couple pumps each. Your callipers won’t rust and freeze up so you won’t have to do near as much brake work.

No, not deaf ears, but thanks :moon: :flipoff2:

I usually do it yearly, but sometimes you forget and it goes a couple.

I got about 110k kms out my last calipers. Not bad for lordco reman crap and disposable rotors.

I've never been keen on crimping flex hoses with pliers. If I have to crack a line open I just pull out the bucket and know I'm bleeding them later.

At least these things aren't like VW's where the bleed screws always snap off when you try to move them. That's definitely a treat. 😞
