If you're interested in getting into this sport, meet me for fun times this coming Sunday 1/29/30 at the La Cabra coffee. I'll be there around 7:30 or so. Wheels up at 8:30. The Ellis parking lot gets jam packed if we arrive any later than 9am. La Cabra is a coffee shop, not a restaurant so load up on a big breakfast at home or along the way. Please leave your dogs and kids at home this time so that you can become familiar with what to expect before introducing your them to this type of activity.

Bring a hydration pack or a backpack with water and snacks for the trail. You'll need boots that can tolerate snow and cold temps. If you don't have waterproof boots, bring extra socks to switch out just in case. It's good to layer up so that as you get warmer, you can shed layers as needed. I can lend two pairs of snowshoes but if more folks wanna particpate, you can rent them at REI the night before. Gaters work real well too and I have two sets that I can lend out to go over your jeans. Just give me a heads up in advance so that I can pack them.

If you want to pick up a set of used snow gear, hit up Outdoor Regear but be aware, they close at 6pm! They have quite a few sets of beginner snowshoes when I was there few days ago. link

Afterwards we can head down to Placitas cafe for lunch via FR165 and do some vehicle recovery funnage along the way :) Or you can opt to return to ABQ via the hwy.

Meeting place: Cabra Coffee · 12216 NM-14, Cedar Crest, NM 87008 - https://goo.gl/maps/imTzkGyLhk6qpFDW9
Meeting time: 8am
Weather: doesn't matter, the worse the weather the better.

I will join you guys in spirit and go out my back door that day

Speaking of used gear the company Rerouted is a great source for lightly used outdoor gear. This company is based out of Albuquerque all the transactions are done through the app or online. I've used it multiple times getting gear for the kids. You can also sell your gear too. Highly recommend.

That is a good option too but I wish you can try things on before buying like clothes, shoes, etc w/o going through the hassle of shipping.

We had a great time yesterday, the three of us did about an hour of hiking and covered two miles. When we returned to the car, parking spots were getting premium as the weekenders started to pour in. The weather up there was perfect. Afterwards, David headed home while Johanna and I headed to Placitas and THIS is where it got interesting.

Turned out that the sheriff got called to rescue a lady who got stranded last night so they have been at it since three in the morning apparently. We got to top of FR165 around 10:30 when we saw the mess of Sheriff's rigs. After one of them took the lady out of the mountain, the rest of them spent all morning rescuing themselves out. The Sarge was quite displeased at one of his deputies going down FR165 using his Explorer when there are few lifted 4x4s with winches and gear that should've been the first responder.
We got started about 1/4 mile down when we saw them and pulled over. You know what happens when you pull over in deep snow - we buried both of our rigs. The first 4x4 sheriff went past us but the second one was struggling and inched closer to my ARB. We're talking one inch of seperation when he stopped trying to move fwd. The Sarge got in his truck, which was the third rig and winched the second rig away from me while the second rig was in park with nobody behind the wheel . They put two traction boards behind me and I backed out. Johanna was already backed up to the top in her GX and I caught up to ther.

Then we watched from up top and chatted with the young deputy. It was Sarge's day off so he was more cranky than the usual. I bet everyone was tired .

What I didn't get is that why didn't they just go downhill out the other way, which would have been much easier? Instead they opted to come back up the mountain with their brand spanking new trucks, with tiny bit of lifts and street tires but they did have winches and traction boards. If they had better tires, they'd had an easier time of it.

Anyway, after they cleared out of the way, we proceeded on down. The red Jeep compass is still there from two weeks ago and a new 4runner was added to the mix. We didn't see the 4runner on our way back up so they were recovered. We took half hour to get to Steve's house, ate lunch at the Range in Bernalillo, then headed back up. I got chained up in case I need to rescue people but I was disappointed as nobody was stuck :)

I'll do this again with Isabelle next weekend as this is great practice for her that'll build confidence.

What stood out the most for me was the second rig driver kept asking me "why can't this truck handle this snow?" He was so frustrated at his rig and of course Sarge wasn't helping I'm sure from what we heard.

Can I come out and play next weekend?

I'll try to set something up this coming weekend, let me find out which day I have to work.

Ash, love the stories you bring back. I think you actually look for trouble!

Maybe Liz's knee will be better next weekend. If so, I think I will bring the chains, just in case.

I hope she feels better and y'all can join us.

Well, Liz came home this morning from one of her classes with a bad limp. She has found substitutes for the remainder of her classes this week. She just took two percocets and is on the couch - ouch! I don't think she will be able to snowshoe this weekend. I still might be able to peel away.

oh man, that sucks. Things heal so much slower at our age :bang:

Alright, I nailed down my weekend plans. Let's aim for this sunday, 2/5/23 and meet at Cabra coffee at 0800. Like last time, we can head down to Placitas the back way, eat lunch wherever, and some of us will return back up the same way. I'm hoping Isabelle can join us on the driving down to/from Placitas.

Wheeling with NM4W down south on Sat, not sure I can make the Sunday SnowShoe. Will let you know if I get a second wind. Have fun.

What time do you think you will head down to Placitas? I have to work Sunday morning in Cedar Crest, but might be able to go for the drive. I haven't been that way in a long, long time.

I'm guessing no earlier than 10am, but I can give you a better ETA tomorrow. Isabelle will be heading up to meet us at the beginning of FR165 parking lot around that time or after.

So far it looks like Pappy and Larry will be joining us.
