worth it? I mean I know they look cool but I thought they were made so that your engine could still breathe while its submerged in water (up to the hood). If I stay dry do I need one? do they help the engine breathe better regardless of dry or wet?

Chicks dig 'em.

^ what he said

After I pulled out about a pound of dust and dirt out of my stock filter, who's intake is about headlight level, I've decided that a snorkle might be on my list of future mods and I rarely do water crossings.

Thankfully the stock OEM filter is cleanable. And thank God for the dust collector. I tend to drive behind friends of mine on excusions on the dusty dirt roads because I have AC and they don't. So that means I eat a ton of dust. Having the air intake up higher will help with this as well as get a little colder and cleaner air into the system on a regular basis.

Oh ya...and chicks dig 'em! I'm not looking forward to cutting the hole, however.

When following behind other trucks there is usually way less dust at roof level than at hood level. Seems like a good enough reason to me.

And chicks dig 'em!

Isn't the OEM intake area acutally in between the body and front fender in a pretty enclosed area. No doubt dust will get in there, but there it is somewhat enclosed, rather that a pipe in the air sticking up. The dust i've followed goes way beyond the height of my truck. Dunno.

Im sticking with chick's dig'm.

A good reason to lift the truck.

Have you checked your filter after you followed vehicles on a dusty road? You might be surprised. I sure was. My engine bay is usually pretty dusty after these trips as well, so dust finds its way in there and to the intake somehow.

That's another reason why I'm so glad I have a good OEM filter. In fact, I'd actually lean towards getting a snorkle replacing the intake with a pre-cleaner thing, at least for dusty road trips. Something I can interchange at will.

I was shocked the first time I checked out my bird's nest. More shocked because it was never checked before...by any mechanic that worked on it!!!

On the last Death Valley trip I was on, my air filter was rendered useless by the time I got home. No river crossings for me but I really want a snorkel for the dust as well.

it's all about the chicks. that's the only reason snorkels even exist.
everybody knows that.

also- great conversation starter.

Old Lady: hey whats that thing?
Me: It's a snorkel
Old Lady: What?
Me: It's a snorkel for airflow
Old Lady: No really what is it?
Me: It's my custom exhaust pipe
Old Lady: Then why does it say snorkel?

Real conversation I had in a Costco parking lot

The dust difference is significant. I have two 80's. When my daughter and I do Cruise Moab for a wekk, I always change the filter before leaving for home. Both trucks were about the same until I put the snorkel on mine. Now hers needs changing and mine still looks clean

Additional reason is you get more airflow with cooler air. I did a test using the OBDII under the same conditions and the air temp dropped 15 degrees after installing the snorkel.

Plus my wife digs it :D

I can certainly say that the OEM snorkel works better than any other I have seen. While living in Botswana, we had a snorkel on the HDJ and let me tell you that dust is a BIG problem while driving, especially when you get behind a MAN or Scania truck on a bush road. They don't let you pass, why would they, they don't want to eat your dust.
Well after many many trips into the bush, the filter stayed clean, very clean. The cyclonic action of the stock "bubble" precleaner does its job, spinning out all of the dirt and dust. Quite amazing. I have thought about putting an OEM one on the 80 but I don't see that much dust.
We too got questions when folks saw this. We would just say that it helps us to get CNN. Some bought that notion.

Interesting, well I've been schooled :). guess the dust I complain about amounts to nothing you guys are running through LOL. Good to know a snorkel has more uses than picking up chicks. ;)

I’ve had the same experience with dust and my snorkel. A few years ago I did 250 miles in Death Valley with a group of 10 vehicles in two days. The dust we kicked up was insane. Everyone’s air filters were clogged and packed with dust. I looked at mine once during the trip and when I returned home, it was clean and white. These “dorkles” as my buddy’s refer to them work when it comes to dust. And “no” they are not a chick magnet.
