iirc, the 40 snorkles are like the rest and bolt to the w/s frame, so not sure ifyou can put the w/s down in the manufacturers configuration. that's part of why i never put one on mine. i was thinking of a homegrown one with the accordian rubber at the hinge area, would just kind of override the purpose of a snorkle when the w/s was down.

Some, like mine, do not attach to the windshield. Mine was installed by a PO in New Zealand, so I don't know where it is available.

I don't have an account so I can't upload a good pic. Sorry

Best,

T

Nuclear, thats why i don´t have one yet,cos i like they way its look with windshield down, but at least the safari snorkels use the same bolts @ the WS. Thanks for the inputs, how about an internals ideas for snorkels ??

plus there just ain't no substitute for cruisin with it down.

I had a snorkel from a Jeep TJ on my 40. Allowed me to fold down the windshield with the snorkel on. It's the ARB Safari snokel for the Heep.

That is one sharp looking FJ.

In the south snorkles are about worthless. Our trails are so narrow they would just get ripped off.

How many places are you going to go where the water is that high?

I've heard the whole fresher air thing. I'm not buying it.

It does look cool though. Especially if your going for the whole outback expedition look.

i agree TRollhole, people buy it for diferent reason.... nice cool look... for real river crossing in others countries... i´m here in Florida where God forget brings us with nice mountains... but we have deep swamps and on raining seasons every single trip to the wood you can found a single hole going deep to the headlights... just my 2 cents.

Hi All:

It is very true that we all live in different areas with different 'wheeling conditions.

Like "Trollhole" writes on tight forest trails a snorkel tube would get a lot of abuse - the reason why folks fold-down their windshield frames.

On open desert trails the ability to get intake air that is less dusty is a plus of a raised air intake. In a muddy/swampy area a raised air intake helps keep the engine from ingesting water!

Snorkels are also great for the whole off-road "mall cruiser" look! :D

That said, I don't have one on my trail rig, and I fold-down the windshield frame (and run with no top or doors) because of the tight, off-camber mountain trails in my area. But I have in the past 'wheeled a SWB rig with a Safari Snorkel up in this area and never damaged the snorkel assembly.

Regards,

Alan

I've never figured out why people install snorkels, and then have low mounted exhausts. If you stall the engine long enough, you can get water up through the exhaust and into open valves. That's why military trucks with fording kits not only have snorkels, but extended exhausts as well.

.

i didn't think they'd make that much of a difference either until myself with an unsnorkled 60 and a friend with a snorkled 70 ran the san rafael swells. my filter was caked at the air inlet with red utah silt...his was clean looking.

I have been caught in our Eel river and had to get a tow out. My fan, when it hits the water sprays the air filter and chokes the motor out. With a snorkle that would not happen.

Did we all see that youtube video of that red cruiser go into that hole and virtually dissapear only to come up the other side. At it's deepest point the water was half way up the windshield.

My 40's owner's manual suggests removing the fan belt when fording deep water so as not to damage the blades. I haven't seen that bit of advice in any other vehicle's manual. Still, I don't see how that video clip is even possible. How deep can you safely go without a snork?

i could be wrong but i think that truck was a diesel...

OMG, that water wasn't half way up the windshield it actually goes over the top of the windshield for a a sec or two. but he kept that big girl rolling, bow plane forward the whole time. Dang:clap::clap::clap: just hope that someone onshore was holding onto his cb and other electronic gear.
