If you think a gigantic black plastic tube snorkel is decoration - I'd hate to see your Christmas tree.
The stock setup restricts down to about a 2" choke point in the muffler thingy inside the fender. I put my snorkel on at the same time I did my supercharger, so I'm not sure if it makes a measurable difference or not - but the snorkel has a clearly larger cross section for air flow. The added length may counteract this. That would be one for someone into fluid dynamics to figure out.
Frankly, if they were 'worthless decoration,' then Toyota wouldn't likely have designed the truck for a factory/dealer installed snorkel - oh, that's right - they did. The Safari is, admittedly, an aftermarket substitute for a rather expensive Toyota part set.
I consider my snorkel to be an augmentation for the capabilities of my truck. It sees pavement, rocks, dirt track, over the hood mud holes, water crossings, high altitude, sand, snow, torrential rain, wind, tree branches, high temps, low temps, etc... I'd thought about putting a cyclonic cleaner on top of it, but with the number of branches I've run up it - the scoop hood works just fine.
Still - if you must get a snorkel for a mall cruiser, at least get a quality one. These cheap knock offs aren't worth drilling a hole in your fender for. What is the plan when (not if) it breaks? Maybe just glue it onto the side of the truck if you're just after 'the look'.
