2 years and it looks perfectly fine. Mine was the $30 from Malaysia +50 Shipping on the slow boat took 6 weeks to get stateside.

Dang! I just got an estimate back from Rahoo4x4 with shipping at $158, abput $200 total. Any link to the one with the $50 shipping? i'd be all over that deal.

Most noticeable effect of UF is bleaching/fading.

UV will make plastic brittle and prone to crack or crumble. If UV is the only concern, there are several products you can spray on (that are clear or colored) that will protect against UV.

Snorkel failed at -20c that's below 0 farenheit- most trucks requiring snorkel will Never see those temps....

Mmmm - you're off base there.

A snorkel is not just for playing submarine. It also gets the air inlet up out of the dust stream on dirt roads, pulls cooler air than what's in the fender and gives office workers and strangers at gas stations something to point at and ask, "What's that?" Or, "Does that mean you can go under water?"

A properly set up expedition FZJ80 with a snorkel can push through a water hole with water over the hood. It can also benefit from the snorkel when running down a dusty dirt &/or gravel road.

The expedition FZJ80 setup may be expected to submarine one day, drive through a desert the next, push through a mountain snowstorm the next, start when it's -40*C - and just keep moving.

I have used my Safari snorkel as a limb riser enough times to vouch for it's 'toughness'. If you're only interested in looks - the knock off might do just fine for you. Me, if I bounced a tree limb off of it on a 0*F day and the thing shattered, I'd be ticked.

If you're mall cruising - yeah, OK, you don't care.

If you're planning to -use- your truck, get a real one.

Either way you're cutting a 4" hole through a perfectly good fender. I like that what I mounted to that is a high quality piece.

IMHO YMMV

Mine sees temperatures -30C and colder... :meh: That right there would be a deal breaker.

Eh, the added benefit of a snorkel for cleaner air is minimal at best.

In fact, I'd bet you're likely to have less dust from the stock setup than a snorkel. Because the intake is inside the inner fender, it is quite shielded from dust and other particulates.

This is easy to test. After driving down a dusty trail for a few hours, open up your fender and see how dusty it is in there. Then compare that to the amount of dust on the outside of the truck. Guarantee you that the outside will have more dust than the inner fender will.

(Since I've cut a hole in my fender for a side vent, it's easy for me to do this, and I can personally attest to the inner fender being far cleaner than the outside of my rig, despite never being cleaned.)

But even disregarding this, the OEM setup does such an incredible job that the (potential) gain is so minimal as to not be necessary at all.

Your other points (occasional water crossing, cooler air intake) are well taken however.

Agree, for 99% of users the dorkel is a decoration.

The dust thing is real. After a day of dusty trails, the tuna can on a dorkel equipped rig will have noticeably less dust than a stock rig. Is it significant, IMHO, no. Mine gets wheeled often, mostly in dusty desert conditions, the air filter has been in it for ~3yrs and isn't close to clogged, so :meh:.

The cool air thing is also real, they are good for a few degrees, again :meh:.

The water thing, for most no. The stock setup is very well setup for this, better than most other things on the rig. Stock it is good to about the door handles, on my rig that is ~4' of water, much more than most would attempt. That depth requires lots of other mods to be done to avoid damage and is risking totaling the rig. If you get stuck in that water depth, the interior will quickly fill, taking out the electronics, etc.

But it is a good decoration.:hillbilly:

I simply stated fact-Most trucks... you could total all the snorkel equipped vehicles in Nebraska - then travel anywhere in Borneo, Central America , Africa, and Australia and get back to me ....

If you think a gigantic black plastic tube snorkel is decoration - I'd hate to see your Christmas tree.

The stock setup restricts down to about a 2" choke point in the muffler thingy inside the fender. I put my snorkel on at the same time I did my supercharger, so I'm not sure if it makes a measurable difference or not - but the snorkel has a clearly larger cross section for air flow. The added length may counteract this. That would be one for someone into fluid dynamics to figure out.

Frankly, if they were 'worthless decoration,' then Toyota wouldn't likely have designed the truck for a factory/dealer installed snorkel - oh, that's right - they did. The Safari is, admittedly, an aftermarket substitute for a rather expensive Toyota part set.

I consider my snorkel to be an augmentation for the capabilities of my truck. It sees pavement, rocks, dirt track, over the hood mud holes, water crossings, high altitude, sand, snow, torrential rain, wind, tree branches, high temps, low temps, etc... I'd thought about putting a cyclonic cleaner on top of it, but with the number of branches I've run up it - the scoop hood works just fine.

Still - if you must get a snorkel for a mall cruiser, at least get a quality one. These cheap knock offs aren't worth drilling a hole in your fender for. What is the plan when (not if) it breaks? Maybe just glue it onto the side of the truck if you're just after 'the look'.

You seem to be under a misunderstanding common to people from the East coast that the rest of the country is empty and void of terrain. Snorkels are actually relatively common here for river & rescue trucks. Yes, we have highly active hydrology in Nebraska. Last summer I drove through 3-5' of water for over a 1/2 mile without my tires ever leaving pavement. 2011 Missouri River floods - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I didn't equip my FZJ80 to stay home with though. It is my camping & expedition vehicle that just happens to be my winter daily driver.

Back to the point - if you're planning to buy a snorkel and drill a 4" hole through your fender, mess with the mounting bolts inside the fender, connect up the air intake, extend the axle breather lines up and waterproof electrical connectors - then at least get a snorkel that isn't going to break easily.

Anyone figure how to order these for the states?

You could get the one from Ebay, looks pretty similar, $156 shipped to your door, from Malaysia, Ebay FZJ80 Snorkel Seller seams to have good feedback and has sold quite a few snorkel kits, only a few for the 80, buts lots for other rigs. Someone try it and report back.

Well i ordered one so ill wait and post the results when I get it. My friends tacoma has a Safari so it would be easy to compare it, Ill take lots of pics

Cool... now it'll be great to know how the build quality is. Is it being sent to you by air or sea freight?

I have a 'copy' snorkel on my 100 series - it's branded as Powerful. It's not had much abuse apart from sitting in the African sun day in day out for the past 1 year. No fading or warping that I can see.

Here are some pics...

Why do people keep making a giant deal out of drilling a hole in the fender? It's a fender, not the frame, if you're so scared buy one from the for sale section and cut that one. I say buy the Chinese snorkel and put it on, if it breaks oh well lesson learned. Snorkels look cool, whoever said that most people have them as a decoration is right. I said most, I take my truck to the limits all the time and if I'm ever in something that I need a snorkel, I probably shouldn't be there anyway.

I've seen people spray their snorkels with Tuff liner or Rhino liner. This alone would decrease or prevent the fatigue of the lesser quality Polyurethane replica snorkels.

Has anyone used one of the eBay snorkels?

If intake up in the air has no affect why do most/all semi have intake up high also most/all new tractors/combines have air intake as high as possible surely they are on to something? also 1 benefit to snorkel would be forced air intake compared to just as much as the engine can "suck" in. That just my POV though

:cheers::D I am either in Phoenix, AZ or Puerto Vallarta Mexico :grinpimp: I have sunburn form swimming on the beach today!!! Sorry Had to brag!!!! :flipoff2: no MINUS NOTHING HERE.. move south and buy the malaysian dorkel!!
