Thanks to @POTATO LAUNCHER for installing the Sniper EFI kit on my 78 FJ40. The difference is amazing! Runs like a new truck and as always Casey’s attention to detail is second to none. Couldn’t be happier! Ended up using Redline adaptor and McRobb GenII Power Surge for fuel delivery. Very clean install and less evasive since we didn’t have to cut into stock tank.

Nicely done...I've been happy with mine so far as well.

I need to start a thread - I've got a few tricks up the sleeve with mine, and I might try to grab a copy of the tuning after it's had some drive cycles as well. Not critical, but it would help others get just a bit more of a jumpstart in the future vs relearning from scratch every time.

They do run surprisingly well out of the box, though. After a bit of driving, it is good to push the learn/adjust table up into the base table - I had a few spots that were up to the learning limits.

Looks good @danmc00 any chance you could provide a link to the fuel line wrap Casey used on your install.

I need to get some of it…thanks.

"I wonder if these are the webers of the future? Decade from now and you`ll be trying to put an aisan back on it? "

I doubt it; they are both (Weber/Aisan) inefficient tech, just "guessing" the appropriate amount of gas to "dribble" in from an open bowl of splashing around fuel, regardless of elevatiion, weather, etc...

Where/how did you mount the Power Surge tank? Looks like maybe it is between the battery and the heater blower, beneath all the fuel lines?

NICE!
I'm about to start working on installation of one on my 78. O2 bung is all I have done so far.
All tips and tricks welcomed.

I think in the future there will be even better EFI tech, just based on how quickly the aftermarket has progressed in the past few years. Where the really impressive gains have been is with tiny self learning ECUs controlling more complicated engines with coil on plug, port injection and variable valve timing.

been considering this as well. just general question to anyone- what is the "all everything" cost at the end of the day with an outside shop doing the work? just ball park.

I've seen it on Amazon

A-Team Performance Heat Sheath Aluminized Sleeving for Ultimate Flex Seal Tape Heat Shield Protection Barrier 1/2" x 36" (3ft) Withstand 500 Degrees F to 2000 degrees F Radiant Heat

,

"Withstand 500 Degrees F to 2000 degrees F Radiant Heat"

Does this mean it will melt below 500F?
Sorry. Strange parameters.

Yeah I had to laugh. I'm not sure what happens until you get to 500 degrees.

I’ll have to find all my receipts to get the all up costs. I bought the Sniper kit directly from Holley. I used Redline Cruisers for the manifold and air cleaner adaptors. I bought the Lokar 36” throttle cable off of Amazon. The fuel stuff came from McRobb Performance. i did quite a bit of other maintenance stuff at the same time (distributor, plugs, wires, oil pan gasket, side cover gasket, etc) so it’s hard to judge time spent on just the EFI conversion. I’m lucky to have someone like Casey just a couple miles from me. Just find the right shop or follow the instructions and I’m sure you’ll be fine. He installed the Power Surge where the charcoal canister was on the passenger side. I’ll try to get a better pic tonight.
I put some more miles on her tonight and it just keeps running better and better. The throttle response and the acceleration in 4th gear is much improved. The cold startups are my favorite. No more choking or pun ping the gas pedal. Starts right up every time.

I think I was around $1750 for parts on my Sniper install, but I also did the Hyperspark (+$500). I did go more of the homebrew route, though - modified a standard carb adapter, bent all my fuel lines, fabbed up some throttle cable brackets, and I used a cooking pot for the air filter adapter. 😆

Use the factory ignition and you could probably get it done for $1250 or so if you source the misc parts.

And yes, my coil has since been mounted to the fender. 🙃

So with the powersurge do you have to do anything under the car or at the actual tank? Also can you take a pic of how you mounted the cable to your pedal rod?

Thanks for the kind words Danny. To answer a few questions, the heat shield is off the shelf DEI slip on from Orielys. Surge tank mounted in the stock charcoal cannister spot. For future reference on the Sniper it has an internal fuel pressure regulator so it is plug and play with the surge tank. Pedal is stock for 78. I bent the rod part that goes through the red/ orange firewall boot up inside the firewall and removed the ball from it. You need to drill a hole about an inch above the top pedal mount bolt. Tried to keep it as simple as possible. I didn't take pictures of it though.

I will say that this 40 is one of the nicest original not overly molested Cruisers I have ever worked on so keeping a 56k mile truck on the road with tasteful upgrades is a real pleasure. Amazing how it has changed in a couple of years.
