True. I was typing before thinking...

On the trans subject, do you have a trans builder on site? If so is there a chance of asking if there is a trans fluid flow chart available for the '80 series trans? They look like a big wiring diagram that shows how/where the fluid flows in each gear, etc, it's a valve body road map.

I have searched high and low without success. If we had the piece of gold, it would open the possibility of more trans/valve body mods, like a shift kit type tuning.

Does the factory automatic trans shop service repair manual not have that?

They are equipped with a lever on the console that will put it in the desired gear!:hillbilly:

This will also help with the higher rpms you need to get up the hills. My 3FE won't really maintain speed on hills until I'm up over 3000 for the small hills and 3600 or so for the steeper ones. I choose the gear that puts my rpm in that range for hills.

Get a Tundra. 65-70 uphill. With a 3500 pound FJ40 and a 3000 pound trailer. :grinpimp: What's the saying? "There's no substitute for cubic inches"? In this case 381 HP 401 lb-ft torque oh and the towing package is nice too. Did I mention :grinpimp: ?

This sounds a little ridiculous but is something obstructing your peddle from going all the way down? If your trans is computer controlled its really just going to need you to mash it to the floor to down shift quick. I didn't realize that those hills would dog the 80. I can hold 75 with that tbi 350 up that hill if I mash it early and don't let it down shift. That engine has less horsepower and a only 30-40 lbs of torque more. I wonder if it is the trans in an 80 that sucks up a lot of power.

This appears to be me being shy with my rig... now if you read a post about me blowing it up then... well... it will be my fault... again.

I was getting around 45 up the hills but in the one instance where I could not get past 36 was when the damn water truck screwed up my momentum. I need to be more aggressive next time. My tranny has not ever shifted what I think is normal but there again, I have never rode in any other 80 before so I have no comparison.

you gotta develop more foresight and plan your moves ahead - that's how I keep momentum in the 40 :hillbilly:

We use to have those. The black and grey books that were the transmission repair manuals per trans number, i.e., A340. Toyota stopped publishing them and they are not on TIS.

The other day when I drove your truck home and back, it was a good opportunity to have a even comparison. You truck is geared (4.88), tired (35's), and lifted the same as mine. I could tell the difference in the power. It still shouldnt be that big of difference like your stating when going up the hill, it sounds almost like my old 1992 3F the way your describing...

X2. When I drove your 80 after doing the gears, I was expecting to have similar performance to my 80 which is similarly equiped. I was surprised that it didn't have more power. Not quite an equal comparision though since my engine only has 40K on it.

Correct me if I am wrong Kerry but isn't your engine stroked? I would expect yours to be a lot more peppy. I will have see see what happens next time I meet that hill and stop being so shy to push the pedal and of course not get stuck behind a water truck in the middle of the hill.
