Something is seriously wrong with your fzj80 if the best you could do was 36. my 60 with the 2f 33s and stock gears would do 50 up that hill. What did the rpms look like. Hows your compression? Does it need a valve job?

I have the same setup and did the same hill coming back from Payette but I was pulling a trailer.

I hit the power button on the center console. It changes the shift points...I did that hill and got to 50MPH...How hard were you standing on the skinny peddle?

I push the power button as soon as I see hills, then stand on it! Good examples would be 260 out of Cottonwood (Verde Valley), then south on I-17 (now that's a hill); the climb on 89 when southbound into Flagstaff from the res. I can hold 60-65 MPH on both...

The "power button" is fun to play with and all, but once your getting near the mat with the skinny pedal the "power" shift points are automatically used, so does no good. My routine is; when approaching the hill, hit the OD button, turning it off, this shifts 3rd and wakes the motor up, lets it know that we are about to have fun, then mat the shinny pedal. :hillbilly:

I think I saw your rig down at Camelback last week? Nice rig! You've gotten a lot of good advice in the other thread, but your bumpers, sliders, tires, tank all weigh a LOT, plus your lift doesn't help the aeordynamics (such as they are/were). I just have to chime in as a proponent of the V8, though... :D I just laugh as I blow by the hills that had my down to 2nd gear in my FJ60...

I think Phil is making yet another case for the 100 and it's V8.

He hasnt missed an opportunity yet :D

Kevin, with the stock gears and 37's, arent you really in second gear when going up steep inclines? What rpm are you at in second gear and 60mph?

His goal is to be snotts jr.

Yes, 60mph indicated is ~4200 RPM. The "problem" is with the rubber overdrive, 60mph indicated = ~72mph actual.

Beeline to Lake Mary

I do not see how you guys can travel up hill around this state.

I took that route in my stock FJ60 with 31's about a month ago, when I blew the water pump on the backway to Flagstaff. I had to keep shifting between 3rd and 4th, and managed to keep it around 50mph, but it was a struggle.

Definitely was having problems with power at higher altitudes, which considering that FJ originally came from Flagstaff, means that either I've got serious carb work in the future or something in the spaghetti vacuum factory smog setup is goobered. Also have the occasional stumble issue, so going to check EGR and other VSV's before the Mt Lemmon meet-up.

I've not sensed so much hatred at my speed since I drove my RV up I-17 to Flagstaff several years ago.

I will be adjusting the throttle cable in the next few days (time permitting) to determine if I have a stretched cable or not. The transmission just does not downshift as I expect unless I raise up off my seat and really push!! Maybe my legs are just too short.

Murf, how does the SC perform when you are going up those hills? Is it a significant increase?

Make sure you adjust it correctly, see post #3 in this thread.

They are equipped with a lever on the console that will put it in the desired gear!:hillbilly:

Yes, I think it makes a substantial difference - not a race car by any means but I can keep it at 65 All the way up the hill. There are some sections where I have to do a little flogging :steer:.

The other day when I drove your truck home and back, it was a good opportunity to have a even comparison. You truck is geared (4.88), tired (35's), and lifted the same as mine. I could tell the difference in the power. It still shouldnt be that big of difference like your stating when going up the hill, it sounds almost like my old 1992 3F the way your describing. I'd look into that shift cable...

All in all though, Im not sure the performance gains with the S/C is offset by the high expense. I could barely justify it with internal costs but retail I could not.

On the solenoid/ECU shifted trans, '93 and newer, the "kickdown" cable has nothing to do with shift points. The ECU shifts the trans, the "kickdown" only adjusts the system pressure, smoothness of the shifts.

True. I was typing before thinking... Maybe reset the ECU, drive it like you stole it and change the shift point pattern.
