Greetings all,

I recently purchased a 1982 HDJ81 in Uganda that purportedly has about 100,000 km on its 1HDT engine. I got it cheaply, about 4k USD, but it's got loads of issues.

In my three weeks of ownership I have:
  • Replaced transmission solonoid
  • Replaced injectors
  • Replaced all cylinder valves
  • Replaced head gasket
  • Replaced turbo seals
  • Many other issues
I took the car on a trip to Kenya and when I went to start the truck the day after the long journey, almost immediately the cabin began to fill with smoke. I opened the hood and took this video:

Any thoughts? All opinions appreciated.

Disconnect the battery and check all the cables.

+1 on grounds/connections for the sparking. That spark was current looking for a ground in my opinion.

I don't know if the two issues (Smoke and Sparks) are related, given all that you have done so far. It could be coincidence.

Full disclosure - I am not too familiar with Diesel engines.

I've never worked on a 1hdt so you can take this for what it's worth. After checking the grounds and charging system my next move would be glow plugs as they generally use quite a bit of amperage and could cause that type of spark and smoke if a pinched or bare wire grounded on the chassis somewhere. If it is the glow plugs pull the fuse and see if that stops your issue.

it was daring to keep it running while it was sparking. Should be easy to see the spark location with scorch marks etc, though. Broken insulation maybe?

you sure it's an '82 series 80?

I don't know much about the HDJ's but slowing the video down to 1/4 speed on youtube really lets you see first smoke coming from the back of the block, and then a spark jumping right under the rearmost injector. Looks like a heat shield or something right there? I see what looks like a heavy wire coming up from underneath and into that area and it looks like that shorted on something. Did an insulating boot get damaged or removed during the injector work? Did an engine ground lead get left off maybe? Whatever it is it's got plenty of juice to it!

Send ur video to John Voo at Ateb in vancouver....hes a master mech for 1hdt and does pretty much all of the work on them in bc....google ateb burnaby....hes very approachable and is also in ih8mud (i forgot his username though)

Not having seen the video: Back of engine you should find a glow plug wire. Find the loose end and re -attach or isolate/insulate.

Check the bar and connections to all 6 glow plugs these need to be free of contact with other parts as well since power is supplied from wire to glow plugs while ground is via the threads in block. This bar should be neat and carefully tucked into proper position .

Probably best to look things over and with someone working the key test before you create another problem

WTF! Diesels don't need spark to run!!!!!

Seriously, though, it looks like Squash hit the nail on the head. I would guess glow plug wires. It's possible that the smoke is from the harness on the back and when it burned through, it energized the block, and sine it looks like the ground cable is off, it arced through the closest ground it could find, the fuel supply line for the injector.

As you know, once you let the smoke out,.......you cannot put it back in!

Good luck!

While you are in there reconnect the heater valve cable.
And the one wire does look like power supply to glow plugs.

Love the sound of that tractor engine!
