I used to be the OIC of a LE Traffic Bureau I’m So Cal. So, don’t go the route of registering you car in a different state to avoid Cal smog issues. It’s illegal. Period. It doesn’t matter if you have homes in other states. If your primary residence is Cal register it here or risk some serious fines if caught. That being said, check the sticker under the hood to determine if it requires Calif or Federal emissions. That will help to determine exactly what is needed. Next, do your homework to find out what parts are missing and/or not functioning. Make a list and present it to the seller and tell them that these parts need to be installed before purchasing. Fortunately, early 76 models had fewer parts that later years. I personally chased down all the smog stuff to the tune of $4000, and installed them myself. Point is, you can still find them and that’s part of the fun. Good luck, if you like it and want it, you will figure it out.
