The smog pump finally went out. I used a spare AC belt to get back on the road using the crank to alt to water pump method.

I replaced the pump with a re-manufactured Cardone. It seems to be good quality.

Everything seems great... but, now the drive belt rubs on the smog pump flywheel. I see no adjustment to make the pump go from back to front (grill to firewall) direction (it fits snug in the bottom bracket). The flywheel is installed correctly because it only went on one way. It's driving fine, but the drive belt is getting a little love from the flywheel.

Any clue as how to resolve this issue?

BTW, I was able to install the smog pump without taking off the power steering pump. It was tough, but I think it went faster than uninstalling all the PS junk.

Another frustrating thing was that the reman pump fit into the bracket so tight I had to use a board and hammer to get it aligned so the long bracket bolt would go through. This took some time and frustration.

All and all I have no squeaks or squals coming from the smog pump; minus the belt rubbing.

Thanks for the help.

It sounds to me like you got the wrong part. What is the Cardone part number on the part? Also, what you are calling a "flywheel" is a called a "pulley".

This is a hard belt to replace for me. Seems like the belt is not long enough and the adjustments are not easy compared to the other belts. Mike

Yes, pulley.
I don't have the part number at the moment; I'll check on that tonight.

There are at least 3 different Cardone pumps. The cali pump appears to have a different pulley mount that looks like it will not accept the pulley that will fit the other two pumps. You mounted your old pulley to the new pump or did the new reman pump come with a pulley installed that you are using? I believe the correct part number for your truck is 33768.

33779 - pre 1/79 smog pumps, not what you want.
33776 - post 1/79 Federal emissions.
33768 - post 1/79 Cali emissions.

I have had no trouble swapping/replacing belts (make sure you have all the OEM adjustment bolts). My only trouble now is that the long drive belt rubs on the smog pump pulley. I mean it is just a hair, but enough to be rubbing and annyoing. I don't want the belt to fray and snap. Of course I always have a spare. It almost appears that the belt will wear down just enough so it does not rub (i.e., break in, if you will). This is not ideal, but I will put some miles on it and see.

I will aslo check the part #.

Other than that, I am happy with the pump. My old pump had been going bad for some time b/c of the PS leak. The PS leak was fixed several years ago, but it finally caught up to the smog pump.

I know there are lots of previous smog pump threads but none have covered this specific issue.

Any other ideas welcome.

Thanks John,

I put my old pulley on the reman pump. It only fit one way. I will check those part numbers. They are very close, so there could be some confusion. It appears to me that I will have to swap in the right pump. The pump did come with a lifetime warranty (O'Reiley's, ~$100).

Hi Benji-
I work for CARDONE. If you give me the details on your vehicle I can check to make sure you ordered the correct smog pump.

You can also check here. Catalog Search

Thanks!

You have really improved the Web site!

Thanks Lippy.

Great info.

You were right John.

I hope it is the wrong part, although I am not looking forward to reinstalling another smog just after I wrestled this one in .

I went ahead and called to get the part number that we ordered.
It is the right part 33-768.
The auto dude said that there could be some differences between each reman pump. In hindsight, it was extremely difficult to get the pump situated in the bottom bracket. The old one just slipped out. I wonder is this could be causing the problem. The reason I think it might be a flaw in this unit is that the drive belt just rubs a hair, but enough to be concerned, on the pulley.

O'Reilly's is willing to swap it out for a different unit for free .

I hope this fixes it.

So you are saying that the belt that goes around the crank, alternator and power steering pump is rubbing against the pulley of the smog pump?

does the smog pump belt seem to be running straight?

I've had this same problem when I have put the power steering pump pulley on backwards. It doesn't seem that you took that off, but maybe it's been on backwards for a while and didn't matter with your last pump. Also check that all the belts are running in the correct grooves.

When I have removed my air pump, I remove the power steering pump from it's bracket, but still leave the hoses connected. I can push the pump forward engough to get better access to the air pump.

My last Cardone rebuilt air pump lasted 40K miles.

If you give me the specs on your vehicle I can see if our tech dept can pull together any info for you.

2mbb: The PS pump was not removed. All the belts are on correctly and seem to be running straight and in the correct grooves. The diagram, I believe, is not to scale so it does not show the drive belt passing in front of the smog pulley after it descends from the PS pump.

cruiser guy: all my other smog components are working top notch so I want to keep it all in good working order.

Lippy: 1984 fj60.

thanks.

no smog requirements in N TX for vehicles over 25 yrs. i also have an 84. when mine went i just made the old smog pump pulley. never noticed any difference in how she ran.

I had the same exact problem on an 86 FJ60. The bottom of the smog pump where it drops into the bracket was too wide. I actually had to trim about 1/2 off of it to get it to slide in correctly. After I did that I had no problems. This may be your issue. I have seen this happen withe other aftermarket parts that I have had to "tweek" a bit, so it was easy to remember to just make it work. It would make sense to me that if you were to trim the mount on the pump a bit it would give you the clearance you are looking for. HTH,

Noah

It appears that the wrong pump was put in the box.
I got a new Cardone and it looks much more like the original.
I will install it today and give an update.

Noah, interesting how this happens often.

I hope the new Cardone pump does not have this problem.

Enjoy
