I thought bigger was better! :flipoff2: Oh, we're talking oil filters.

I have read that all the Toy OEM filters are no longer made in Japan. I have also used the K&N filter and the NAPA Gold filters, both larger filters and think they both perform very well.

Eric, didn't realize you had great taste in music. Good to see. I still say that 1974 through 1978 were the best years.

haha concrete -- i loved ben folds five when i was at duke -- too bad those days are gone -- i miss carolina --

Hey concrete--

SEe, you and I do have something in common (even if we don't agree politically).

I'm a big fan of 72-about early 79. Then I fast forward to the post-coma Jerry stuff and the end of Brent's days weren't bad either.

I spent 91-95 as a tourhead, so to speak (at least part of the year).

Eric--definitely some great North Carolina shows for the boys...remember Charlotte's 91-95 very vividly.

Best.

I haven't done much shopping (still have a few 20004 left), but I notice DriveWire has big and small oil filters, in Bosch and Denso, for our trucks.

IMO, startup rattle doesn't have anything to do with the filter. ..

I would not be so quick to discount the oil filters role in start up rattle, best I have been able to determine start up rattle comes from the timing chain,

The timing chain tensioner is oil pressure actuated, until oil gets to the tensioner and then fills it chain will have some slop, the 22r had the same problem and the chain has been known to wear a hole in the timing cover into the water pump cavity,

Robbie has reported luck with drilling the inlet of the tensioner larger to reduce start up rattle

The filter comes in that the smaller filter takes less time to fill, if Toyota had mounted the filter vertically it would not have mattered but mounted horizontally it can drain and will be 50-90% empty on the next start

The longer it takes to get oil pressure up and the higher the RPM the more start up rattle

And yes I am hoarding oil filters, got 28 20004's left :flipoff2:, Chevy did the same thing when they dropped the UltraGaurdGold line for all but the Corvette, was not going to get burned twice

Raven, if you hit the skids...i'll buy some filters off ya :flipoff2:

Is the full part number 90915-20004 or 90914-20004?
whodat

Ok, Raven you make a good point, the filter does matter of course.. one reason I run the 20004's as well I guess. But I still maintain my position that one should begin with cleaning and preventative maintenance when issues arise, before jumping to modifications... just my $.02 Whodat do what you want- and it's e999 Eric that you want to hit up for the filters.. he's probably over 100 now. :)

90915-20004

ok, no luck finding the oem...so here's what I did.

90915-20004 crosses Fram PH3614 which crosses to Donaldson P550335.

I work in the HD truck industry and have access to Donaldson which has an excellent quality reputation. granted, not oem...but smaller with anti-drain valve.

can someone check out these specs and see how it matches up to the 20004

-- i change my 20004s after 3000 miles and use synthetic -- not sure if there's any way to clean them up though -- if anyone wants em, they can have them --

-- sorta gross -- imagine shipping used oil filters -- !!

agreed

whodat,

That link doesn't give enough information. If you want details on the construction of the -04 filter then do some searching on this site, here in the 80 section. At one point there were some links posted to very specific pictures and construction information.

is anyone out there using a non-toyota smaller filter? purolator or sumpin?

did a screw up and use the 20004 filter on my dads 4runner since he said its leaking...perhaps just didnt tighten it all the way ???? should have used a YYVB? model filter fo the 4runner...guess i will have to go and get one at Advance Auto instead...

RavenTai,

I was being somewhat facetious before. I run an Oberg on a motor that alone is worth more than all 3 of my cruisers. I've seen the study you've linked before and well all can speak of is my own experience. So far in 30 years of driving and wrenching, I have never seen an oil filter failure related problem. I've put a shiite load of frams in my vehicles (currently 9 an counting). For example, my 84 toy 4x4 owned since new has had nothing but frams and castrol dino in 250+k. The engine has never been opened up and no oil burning issues. Maybe I am just living a charmed life. All I'm saying is that I don't believe there is a whole lot of difference in the over the counter filters that requires getting spooked up about. Frequency is the more critical parameter in my humble opin. Even the Oberg gets opened up after a day at the track. The beauty of the Oberg is you just open it up inspect and clean the SS screen and bolt it back together. I think it is a little much in a DD LC application though. Guess I put in the fram and live on the edge.

You will likely never see a direct oil filter related failure, the one oil related failure in my family was due to a bad choke that went unfixed for years, but why one motor makes 300k before rebuild and another barely makes 150K has to do with it's environment, oil and filter being part of that, I have yet to see hard #'s on what higher quality filters and oil will do for you in terms of longer engine life in a DD situation, but I believe quality clean oil is a good thing.

Maybe some perspective?,
You can buy a Fram for $3 it will work at filtering oil, past experience of me and you proves it so, but if a $2 Wal-Mart Supertech filter can provide higher quality construction, better flow, and better filtration why waste the $ to have an orange can on the side of your block?

Fram is a very poor value and worse of all a deception. If you want better still there are filters out there that can provide with a matching price

For non-OEM oil filters, if you want the smaller filter, just search on '98 Toyota Land Cruiser. It's the same one used for the 4.7 V8 in the 100 series.

I'm going to start using the NAPA Gold filter part#FIL1348. According to the NAPA guy, the gold version is made by Wix. I've been using the Toyota xxxB5 small filter.

If you search on 80 series trucks, most third party filters are the large capacity size.
