I have a couple of Big Agnes bags for my son and I and Thermarest pads too including the waffle foam backpacking z fold versions. The BA bags especially rock in a Hennessey hammock which I use quite a lot because the pad never separates from the bag; it's in it's sleeved pocket; great idea. We use the BA insulated air core (they have more than one pad) and the only drawback so far is that will take your breath away (it's not self inflating) at altitude filling it, but it's worth the effort.

That said I have the Camprest version of the Thermarest and have for many years and it always works.

Picked one of these up barely used. Had to fix one tiny pin hole.

Super awesome. I got the lounge chair dealio for it too works slick and adds some protection to the pad. Not that they need it.

Big Agnes bag with the insulated blow up mattress is great and saves so much weight for backpacking. It's great on top of the cot also.

I'm handing down my Thermarest after sleeping on one of these and my REI dividends just arrived...

I thought about recommending the Thermarest, but it seems about 20 people already beat me to the punch. I got the green one, little fatter because I'm a side sleeper and it's long. I paid around 80 bucks. As soon as I tried it in my living room, I fell asleep right away. As good, if not better than your average motel 6 bed.:)

If space isn't an issue then the Paco Pad is great. NRS.com Someone mentioned it above. Good pad and tough.

Just upgraded to the new thermarest dreamtime . It awesome. Uses a memory foam insert along with the thermarest pad. Check it out . You wont be disappointed.

I just bought 2 of these, too. The bigger one, 30"x70" I think. Most comfortable i've ever slept on the ground. I still have an older lightweight model thermarest I use for packbacking that has lastest about 12 years. They're great quality. I'd say pick one from their line that best fits your needs.

Hey Elbert - Expected ground temp is the most important factor in choosing a pad. I'm guessing it doesn't get too cold in AL, so maybe not your concern. But if you get a pad with an R-value greater than 3.5 - you'll be sweating in warmer temps.

For anything below 32f, go Exped downmat without a doubt. For anything above - doesn't really matter. It's all comfort or weight (if your backpacking) above 32f.

I ended up buying a sleeping pad from cabellas ...

no...its normally not that cold here in the winter as compared to other area of the country, so comfort is the main factor for the pad. I'll look into one of the thermarest products next time around.

I'm going to resurrect this topic because I spent a cold night on the ground this past Friday and woke up with a backache. I came away with the notion that I need sleeping pad. I've read through the above posts but wanted to know what has changed on the topic in the intervening 3+ years.
I'd say the most important characteristics would be comfort and cost followed closely by warmth.
Packability and weight isn't a big concern.

Anyone have any experience with these products?
