my raingutters have a black trim on them, its all in great shape, as is the whole of the vehicle...

But i am planning gutter clamps for a roof rack to hold a jack, shovel, axe, a very low profile toolbox, and room for three medium sized northface duffel bags that may never actually see use, but they are part of our fire evacuation plan, and since so are dogs, they would have to go on the roof.

anyway... the stupid question:

does that trim have to come off to use gutter clamps? it wiggles around, and my sense is that it would prevent solid grip on the gutter by the clamp.

It does not have to come off but I would. Clamps tend to muck up perfectly fine specimens. They come off very easily and you will barely even be able to tell they are missing. Purely decorative.

Yup took mine off long ago and have had a rack on ever since.

I have gutter clamps and never had an issue with the black trim being left on

i left mine on and they work and look great.

My black plastic trim things have been damaged by the roof rack that came with my vehicle. I now have the rack off and the trim is kinda mangled. It sounds like I may be able to just pull them both off and discard? I was considering trying to glue them on, but maybe that's dumb.

Yeah, you can just pull those right off. It looks better without them, IMHO. They are not functional, and mine seemed to be held on with a pretty weak adhesive which left no residue. After I pulled them off I wondered why they were there in the first place. You could take them off gently and retain the option to reinstall them, though I doubt you'll want to. They're worthless, to my eye and in my opinion.

Thank you. This guy says he got OEM new ones for $100 USD so there should be an option to go back if I want later. But my current ones are janky and wanting to fall off, so they are coming off later today.

My gutter trim was also damaged and peeling so I removed it. I thought the cruiser looked kind of plain without it so I spray painted the gutters black. I like it better without the trim and the spray paint is holding up very well.

Most likely that trim kept the rack clamps from damaging the rain gutters themselves.

I didn't even know there was trim covers on there until one pulled off in a car wash (My truck is black)

When I saw that, I went to remove the one on the opposite side and it was never there from when I bought my truck.

They won't be available forever, so if you think you may want new ones in the future, buy them and put them on the shelf. Otherwise, leave them off and move on.

I pulled mine off some years ago. Still have them. Why? I don't know.

They pop on and off, they have a little lip on them that latches on, if the little lip in the trim piece gets closed or messed up won’t clip back on. I just put a new one in, no adhesive is on it

i've been considering removing mine. the drivers side is not clipped on at the bend in the A-pillar, and I can't get it clipped with the whole thing installed, and it's probably damaged anyways. my rack and Gamiviti feet are holding it all on :D

getting new ones seems like a pain, with multiple reports of them arriving, even at the dealer, damaged.

I replaced mine a few years ago and each of the new pieces arrived at the dealer in a huge refrigerator sized box that was 99.99" empty. We got a chuckle at the parts counter opening them up as those boxes wouldn't remotely fit in the 80. Not a silly question and I see no real functional value with or without them...
