Love that idea on filling the cracks. Today I got the help of a friend with a laser cutting table to etch in his name and crew info

Found some brass in the hobby section of Ace Hardware. Time to oil it up.

And first coat of oil.

Backside has some cool grain.

Boiled linseed? Looks great!

Yes, two coats of boiled linseed so far. I’ll do it daily for a week. Leather sheath is next.

I hear all sorts of bad things about boiled linseed, but I've been using it for 50 years now and never had a problem.

Just need to apply it in thin coats and renew from time to time

I'm 6 coats in so far. Will keep applying for a few more days. Then yah I'll instruct the boy to do it a couple times per year if he uses it. Or he can just display it. Either is fine by me. We have plenty of axes laying around if wood needs splitting.

My son leaves for Philmont in three weeks so finally getting around to working on this old Ranger axe. My first time making a real effort to hang an axe. The walnut wedge split on me. Maybe it was too thick? Used a grade A heritage handle from Whisky River.

Not sure if I want to stain the handle to match the original or leave this natural. I used some Testors gold enamel paint to fill in the etch. Pretty sure the axe would have originally been painted black with gold in the etch. This has such a nice patina I could not bring myself to painting the whole head.

Beautiful! I’d apply some BLO On that handle and roll with it. Edit sorry didn’t see you were already doing that

Terrible pic, but here are mine. All are Hults Bruk (Swedish made).
Most are refinished heads, with new HB hickory handles.
I inherited one from my Grandfather, and that sent me down the rabbit hole .
Still looking for a few more.

I have Gransfors Bruk splitting maul and it's awesome. IIRC Husqvarna 13" hatchets were made by them as well, and mine was awesome, too, until I lost it at night in creek. Got a Hultafors forest axe as a gift, the size fits my needs better, but I don't like it. Think the Gransfors Bruk one is coming.

Swedish axes are the best.

Absolutely, Gransfors Bruk are premium tools…if I had come into these “organically” instead of starting off with the brand as a family heirloom, I most likely would have chosen Gransfors. They are arguably the best.
Husqvarna axes are actually made by Hults Bruk, under contract. I have their 13” hatchet as well in my camp truck…fantastic tool!

Just returned from Philmont. Gave the axe to my son after completing the trek. He got the sheath branded this morning. All his camps listed as well as crew info.
