Elm = Inhumane, but just rent a Splitter for a Day. It has bad smelling smoke, but heat value is good. Can't say I've given wood to 10 people, or any...but split a lot of hardwood growing up for winter heat. I'd love to see a maul that makes it years without being rehandled, but then again haven't seen a fiskars handle break in any of their axes or hatches. Have gone through a lot of wooden and fiberglass maul and sledge handles.
Split a lot of elm so it was sledge and wedges more often than not. Elm and hickory were the most common. Elm is just terrible.

My first time making a real effort to hang an axe. The walnut wedge split on me. Maybe it was too thick? Used a grade A heritage handle from Whisky River.

Not sure if I want to stain the handle to match the original or leave this natural. I used some Testors gold enamel paint to fill in the etch. Pretty sure the axe would have originally been painted black with gold in the etch. This has such a nice patina I could not bring myself to painting the how head.
